Protesters are angry about the US-led war in Iraq Hundreds of people have been marching through Athens to protest against a visit by US Secretary of State Colin Powell for the Olympic Games. They had hoped to march to the US embassy but their route was blocked by several hundred riot police.

Some violent scuffles also broke out, with demonstrators throwing bottles and placards at police lines.

Participants were protesting against the US' policies in the Middle East, including its deployments in Iraq.

Police want the demonstrators to stay clear of the embassy, which is located on a major Olympic traffic lane, correspondents say.

....The Greek Communist Party is organising another protest for Saturday.

The weird thing is that I would probably protest Colin Powell for some of the liberal things for which he stands.

A fine American, but not a fine conservative.

They should really show their ire and refuse any aid we send them. (not sure if we do, but every country seems to be on the dole)

It's the same logic that the Greeks had for blaming the three U.S. runners for the Greek hero not being able to pass his drug test.

It's all America's fault.
It's all Bush'es fault.
It's because of the Iraq war.

I'll never spend a dime in Greece - ever.

For sure. I was suprised when GWB picked him, but the name and the service record helped, I guess. Yes, Powell is not a conservative, but neither is GWB, in a pure sense. It is getting harder to find one in Washington nowadays.

Politics is running this country now, not a government for and by the people.

Fair reply. The Cons have been marginalized and pushed to the edges since the mid-90's. The only time the blue-blood Republicans toss crumbs the conservative's way is when they discover that their middle of the road (read: no principles) policies have left them with the distinct possibility of losing power. Then, they're more than happy to go to church bake sales, shooting ranges, NASCAR events, and occasionally, invite conservative think-tank types to join their teams.

It's pretty pathetic, in a lot of ways.

Bush spent his first 4 yrs in re-election mode delivering to blue-bloods and trying to appease the Dems. We'll get ours in Bush's 2nd term, when he can pursue conservative policies without worrying about polls and approval ratings.

Can you believe these Athens protesters? Walking around in Nike sneakers with a Coke in one hand and a Big Mac in the other, bad-mouthing the USA and everything she represents. Shameless commies!

I've been watching boxing throughout the Games (I'm watching American Andre Ward in his semifinal bout right now), and American boxers have been heartily booed/whistled by the crowds in this particular arena for two straight weeks. .....much more heartily than in any other sport. It appears that many Greeks have a massive inferiority complex.......and from what I've seen, for good reason.
