Craig McCaw and Bob Herbold Discuss John Kerry's Record Against the High Tech Industry

Hi-Tech Leaders Highlight President Bush's Pro-Growth Policies

SEATTLE, WA - Two of the nation's top innovators came together in support of President Bush's strong record on Washington's economy. Craig McCaw and Bob Herbold, members of the Innovators for Bush-Cheney '04 Leadership Team, held a press conference to contrast President Bush's pro-growth agenda with John Kerry's twenty year Senate record which includes votes for higher taxes and increased regulation that would have prevented the innovation industry from its current success and future growth.

President Bush's commitment to small businesses and the hi-tech community has provided Washington State with significant job growth, business expansion, and an overall strong economy. McCaw and Herbold are both leaders who helped transform the rapidly growing hi-tech industries of America and fueled our economy with dynamic innovations in cellular phone technology, personal computer access and eCommerce.

McCaw said, "America's economy needs to be geared towards growth and expansion.  John Kerry's belief in higher taxes and extreme barriers for free trade would shut down opportunities for American companies abroad and not foster an environment for their creation at home.  John Kerry's desire and demand for higher taxes at the expense of risk takers and entrepreneurers is something a resurging economy cannot afford."

"President Bush has helped create an economic environment where innovators can invest their capital in pursuit of new ideas," stated Herbold.  "John Kerry's 20 year Senate record should worry anyone in the high-tech industry.  Kerry consistently votes for internet taxation and higher capital gains, and against research and development initiatives.  His ever-changing views on free trade would have significantly hurt our industry from a global enterprise perspective and would have limited sending American products abroad."

John Kerry: Wrong For High Tech

Kerry Voted To Allow States To Continue Taxing Internet Access After the Internet Tax Moratorium Took Effect.  He also voted against making the internet tax moratorium permanent.

Kerry Voted At Least Twice Against Amendments Making The R&D Tax Credit Permanent. Kerry also voted against an amendment to extend the R&D credit for one year.

Kerry Voted At Least 15 Times Against Reduced Capital Gains Taxes.  Kerry voted against lowering the capital gains rate for low income earners to 7.5 percent.  A Dukakis/Kerry plan increased capital gains tax from 4.3 percent to 5.375 percent. ("What It Will Mean To You," The Boston Globe, 7/2/83)

Kerry Has Been Inactive On High Tech Issues Despite Serving On the Commerce Committee.  "A high-stakes effort by the Senate Commerce Committee to reshape U.S. technology policy over the last decade has included few contributions from its best-known member. ... [Kerry] has seldom taken a direct role in shaping the major legislative decisions on technology during the 1990s, according to former Federal Communications Commission officials, telecommunications executives and congressional staffers."  (Ralph Vartabedian and Lisa Getter, "In Senate, Kerry Maintained a Low Profile on High-Tech," Los Angeles Times, 3/27/04)

Bob Herbold's wife is the Chairwoman of the King County Republican Party (King County is the largest in Wa. State). They have helped out a lot of R's around here, both by donating money and through working their tails off. They have brought the KCRP back from the dead.

The Herbolds are a class act.

GWB's disdain for the technology sector during the slump of 2001 and 2002 is something I'll never forget. GWB was standing in a farm field proclaiming that $10 billion extra in farm exports was what was needed to turn around our $10 trillion economy. Unbelievable, and there are many more examples.
