The day before John Kerry wrapped up the Democratic nomination for the presidency, he tried to talk the leader of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, retired Navy Adm. Roy Hoffman, out of his now politically potent activism. It didn't work.
Hoffman told FOX News that the call came on March 15.
"I was somewhat flattered when he called me, but his mission was to get me to write down and submit what I thought was wrong in the [book] "Tour of Duty," his biography, where I thought there were mistakes," Hoffman said.
Hoffman commanded all swift boats in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. He began organizing the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in January, which was after the Kerry authorized biography, "Tour of Duty," hit the shelves.
"I felt obligated even though I had retired from the Navy in 1978 after 35 years active duty," Hoffman said. "I thought maybe duty called again. And strictly on my own I started calling people I haven't seen for 34 years or so and I found that the troops were still behind me. So I'd been sending out a number of e-mails and making numerous telephone calls and obviously Mr. Kerry heard about it and he called me."

At least Kerry didn't send him a fish wrapped in newspaper postmarked from Arkansas.
I wonder if Kerry's been in contact with his VVAW buddies: "Remember when we wanted to off pro-war senators? Well, I've revised the mission slightly..."
Kerry presidential campaign control unit. Someone will press the button soon.....
I heard the Fox report on this last night. They said a Kerry spokesman (Meehan?) had just provided a response. it said the claim Kerry offered to change parts of his book was "an outright exaggeration." I've heard of outright lies, outright inaccuracies, but doesn't an "outright exaggeration" mean it's partly true?
bttt
(waving and jumping over crowd's heads)
Over here! Over here!
Response to last sentence: as if Brinkley weren't up to his eyeballs in this fraud!
Even Kerry knows... "Keep you enemies close."
:)
bump TO SUPPORT THE NEW SWIFT VETS AD AND GEORGE BUSH... http://swift2.he.net/~swift2/gardner2.mpg
It's also illegal for a candidate to direct or coordinate the activities of a 527 for the benefit of his campaign.
yes, that's right... either in favor or opposed.
BUT - the catch is that this was before he accepted the nomination. Does that matter?
If so, we have the presumed RAT candidate making a direct ex parte contact with the leader of a 527 group, to solicit, direct, challenge, and mitigate information concerning his candidacy for public office.
Bush hasn't accepted HIS party's nomination even now. Ask the New York Times if THAT matters.
I love that one!
I wonder, then, if Meehan could tell us why Kerry called Hoffman in the first place.
If not to "cut a deal", then why?
