Survey says whites not majority in Texas anymore

HOUSTON White non-Hispanics are no longer the majority in Texas -- for the first time since the 1800's.

Today's Census Bureau survey says whites stopped being the majority in Texas as of last year.

Also, the numbers show that Texas joined only Illinois and North Carolina in having a poverty rate that measurably increased -- while income decreased -- in 2002-03.

Texas state demographer Steve Murdock says the two trends are related as economic woes have slowed white migration from other states.

Luis Figueroa with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund says the future of Latinos is the future of Texas, as the population numbers show.

Also:

-- Most of the Texas population expansion since 2000 has come from births and international immigration -- both sources of predominantly Hispanic growth.

-- The black population remained basically flat, at around ten-point-eight percent.

-- Asian-Americans now account for about three percent of the Texas population.

the "hispanics" admired him very much for that --- so much that they elected him to Congress

I guess to be more honest I should add --- that and the fact that he ran as a democrat is why he got elected to Congress.

That's kinda what this whole thread is about. Or did the Hispanics who overtook whites as the majority in Texas just spring from the earth in cabbages?

I don't know. Where I grew up in Texas, there were more Hispanics than Anglos as is the case where I live in New Mexico. It's been that way in these areas since before 1900.

I only addressed the Republican hostility to non-whites in general. I have seen it and don't think it advances conservative causes at all. (It's mostly on a personal rather than a party level though.)

Was being the party that ended slavery hostility to non-whites? Or Ike's sending in federal troops to enforce Brown? Or a greater percentage of Republicans than Democrats voting for Johnson's Civil Rights bills? Or championing school choice in order allow inner city kids get a decent education? Do I need to even mention the appointments of Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, Rod Paige, White House counsel Gonzales, Spencer Abraham, Alphonso Jackson, Elaine Chao, or Norm Minetta?

Yeah, the Republican Party's got a real hard-on against minorities. I can see where you get the right to some real hard hitting criticism.

are for open borders with Mexico.

Use your head... Not once did I say illegal immigration is okay... and it is not okay to dog on Hispanics.... which you continually do... not okay.

No I don't --- that's a lie --- for one the doctors I use for my family are "hispanic". I just don't happen to lump all people together like you do --- and I think the term "hispanic" itself is goofy --- not as goofy as that term "anglo" but still goofy. I'm against open borders and unlimited immigration with Mexico, I'm against us importing large levels of extreme poverty in order to save the skins of the Mexican elite. I'm for telling Fox and his cohorts it's time for some reforms, that we're no longer going to be the dumping ground for the Mexicans the elites don't want --- that it's time they start solving some of their huge problems.

There were "hispanics" who never immigrated but you can't assume these people want a merger with Mexico or their taxes to keep going up to support more of the kind of immigration we've got now. I hear it every day --- people complaining about Mexicans driving over every day to use the schools and hospitals and the large tax burden on Americans. I hear people who are very upset that their kids have been exposed to TB by some kid from the other side who was using the schools here so the parents didn't want to use the schools on their side because then they have to pay something. And you should hear the comments about the large number of Mexicans on welfare and Medicaid. There are Americans of Spanish descent who fought in our wars --- and you should hear them when the Mexican flag is being flown by their new neighbors. I've also heard "hispanics" say the Republicans just want high immigration to keep wages way low and so they can have servants.

Joe, the Democrat party is in full retreat in this state. You can put your spin on it, but you're not here and you don't know jack.

People said the Democratic Party was in retreat across the country in 1992 before the DNC, as well. Early in the year, Clinton was in third place behind Bush and Perot.

Now, we've lost California and New Mexico, probably for good. We're quickly losing Nevada and possibly Arizona right now. Don't think that Texas can't be next.
