People find punishing others gratifying

August 26 2004 at 08:06PM

Washington - A new brain study suggests that humans get satisfaction from teaching a lesson to people who have behaved badly.

The study may at least partly explain why humans reprimand people who have abused trust or broken other social rules - even if doing so doesn't offer any direct, practical benefits, the journal Science is to report in its Friday edition.

Swiss scientist Dominique de Quervain and colleagues scanned brain activity of male volunteers playing a game during which they exchanged money back and forth. Players could penalise another player if he made a selfish move rather than a mutually beneficial one.

The majority of the players chose to impose the penalty even when it cost them some of their own money, the study found.

The scientist, who used positron emission tomography to scan brains, concluded that reprimanding a fellow player activated the dorsal striatum, a brain region involved in experiencing enjoyment or satisfaction, according to the study.

"Moreover, subjects with stronger activations in the dorsal striatum were willing to incur greater costs in order to punish," the study said.

"Our findings support the hypothesis that people derive satisfaction from punishing norm violations."

Scientists said further studies are necessary to explore how the phenomenon may vary by gender and social group. - Sapa-dpa

Justice is as deep a need as food, clothing, and shelter.

I for one am going to enjoy teaching a lesson to the leftists over at youthink.com after Bush is reelected in November.

Obedience To Authority, edited by Thomas Blass, is one of the most chilling studies you'll ever read. It is amazing how easily the average person will yield completely to anyone with a lab coat (or badge or uniform or rank). Once you understand this, it is easy to see how monsters convince ordinary people to do their bidding.

The average Nazi functionaries were not the scarfaced brutes depicted in movies. They were ordinary bureaucrats who went home to their families, were friendly with their neighbors and led regular lives. It is the banality of evil which entices and ensnares so many...

Where do I send my "Thank You" Letter?

I am so tired of this "ABUSE Crap"

If this is what a Muslim Extremist POW expects to endure, I would expect them to surrender in the Thousands, and soon.

We need to get a Name for them, it is not just "Terrorist", (Terror is simply a weapon , like a "Bunker Buster")

What did they call them during the first Crusade?, besides "Our Enemy" it is a War of Survival, I think we can do a better job at explaining it to those who listen to FM.

Which is why, Exactly why,  Nanny Laws are so Dangerous!

I had a stupid bimbo call and ask if I was certified with the State to build her Barn, (she looks to the State to be her Daddy), the day is coming soon when only the State will approve or dissaprove all transactions, via Insurance or License, both or either is an attempt to have complete Control of Commerce, California has proven that the Socialist Control of Commerce DOES NOT WORK!

I asked her if the State had Certified her to wear shoes, have sex or to get pregnant.
