Former PSU player Baugh dies

Wednesday, August 25, 2004

From staff reports Former Penn State wide receiver Kevin Baugh was killed early Sunday morning in Massachusetts.

Baugh, 42, a Long Island schoolboy star and a member of Penn State's 1982 national championship team, may have died over an apparent drug dispute, police and friends told Newsday.

According to the Newsday story, Baugh was beaten to death with a tire iron near his apartment in Chicopee, Mass., around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Police have arrested three men and a juvenile and have charged them in the incident.

PSU assistant athletic director Jeff Nelson said yesterday that Nittany Lions coach Joe Paterno was aware of Baugh's death but had no comment at this time.

Baugh led PSU in punt returns from 1980-83 and was the team's kickoff return leader in 1982 and 1983.

Baugh was also the Lions' leading receiver in 1983 with 36 catches for 547 yards and five touchdowns. He had one 100-yard receiving game against Boston College in 1983.

Baugh suffered a knee injury late in his college career and, after surgery, was picked by the Houston Oilers in the eight round of the 1984 draft. He didn't make the team.

Sad news I heard of yesterday. I remember Kevin living down the hall in Hamilton Hall. He was a fun-loving kid, and his courageous (bordering on insane) punt returns were a major factor in PSU winning their first Mythical National Championship over Georgia in the 1983 Sugar Bowl.

Sad that sometimes even from the best of athletic systems, kids don't come out prepared for life after football, and never quite make their way into a productive life.

God Speed Kevin. You were something, and you will be missed.

Sad indeed. My brother, Gary played highschool football with Kevin. A friend of mine described Kevin as a really nice guy, down to earth. I didn't know Kevin, but have seen him play, he was awesome. I like to think that Kevin and my brother Gary have been reunited in heaven and are tossing the football around.

Rest in Peace, Kevin

Deer Park HS. From what I gather, he was one of the best athletes ever on the Island.

This article doesn't state it (it's a whitewashed version from PSU), but this was a drug related beating/death.

Very sad.

Yes, it was Deer Park High School on Long Island.

Another story at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette provides more details:

Interesting that he picked football over baseball which he was star material as well. Why do kids do that? We have a friends son going for football over baseball this year at Syracuse and I just think baseball is the better choice when you are good at both. BTW this kid passed up a full scholorship at St. Johns for baseball to play football at Syracuse. I guess we will just pray he does not get hurt.

Collegiate football offers greater potential for advancement to the professional level than does baseball.
True, some NCAA baseball players make it to the pros, but MLB clubs also operate their own "farm systems" to recruit and develop players outside of college sports. Those players actually have a greater advantage since they spend more time training and playing ball without the academic constraints placed upon students.

Football doesn't have a similar "farm system" and relies more heavily on collegiate sports for player development.

All one has to do is be in a lockeroom just before a football game, have a chance to run on the field with all that adrenaline and emotion along with your teammates......it's hands-down one of most thrilling things a young person can be involved with. My son played both but after having a chance to play a year of varsity football, he could never go back to baseball.
