"Speaking of sound probs......haven't been able to figure out why my built-in mike isn't reporting for duty....sometimes when I close up too quickly, I get a feedback squeal, so I know it's working: it's just turned off somewhere. Any clues where to look in Win98?"
Well, lets try the more obvious stuff first.
Instead of single-clicking your sound control in your task tray (the speaker symbol next to the clock), double-click it to bring up your sound properties (play control).
Make sure that your Mic properties, and that the "mute" checkbox is NOT checked.
If you do not see your Mic in the play control, then you need to go up to the options menu and choose Properties. Then check Mic on the list and click OK. Then you should be able to see that your Mic is muted or not.
The squeel is a bad sign though.

Yes, sound properties brought up from the icon in the tray show microphone neither muted nor turned down, not sure what the deal is. Called SoundRecorder, software works but no input from mike. Zip, zero.
I've got fifty cents -- know where I can buy a vowel?

In order to be able to record from your mic, you will need to un mute the mic's sound properties in record mode (not playback mode).
