'Many children' among dead in Red Sea disaster

ATTEMPTS to recover the bodies of the 148 passengers and crew who died when an Egyptian airliner crashed into the Red Sea will continue today in an effort to return them to their grieving families.
"Many children" were among those who died, 133 of whom were French tourists, when the plane went down shortly after leaving the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
French investigators were flying out to the scene last night as reports indicated the tragedy, which happened at 3am yesterday, was due to technical problems rather than a feared terrorist attack.
Tony Blair, who is holidaying near the Egyptian resort from where the plane took off, sent a message of condolence to the Egyptian government, but a Downing Street spokeswoman said the incident was unlikely to affect his family’s travel plans.
It emerged last night that one woman passenger managed to make two phone calls to her nephew before the plane went down. Terrified Fatima Hjiaj said: "Something’s happening to the flight," before her nephew heard screams and the line went dead.[snip to end]
