Gov. Jeb Bush To Skip GOP Convention

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that he won't attend the Republican Party Convention in New York later this month, where his brother will be re-nominated, because of the importance of the Hurricane Charley relief and recovery effort.

"There will be a role later on for me to play," in the presidential race Bush said while speaking to reporters before a Cabinet meeting. "The recovery phase of this is important to get started and ... being up in New York is inappropriate.

"It's appropriate for others but not for me," the governor said.

Bush said he had planned to have a limited role anyway, saying he doesn't really like the national political scene anyway.

"I just don't like all that big dog, big foot national stuff," said Bush, who attended the 2000 Republican Convention in Philadelphia.

"I'm going to help my brother and we've got a great team in place and they're working really hard, but being on the Today Show to talk about inside political stuff is not who I am and that's kind of what you do when you're at these national conventions."

This is the right move, there would be hell to play if he left Florida at this time.

I think he'd like to, but a lot will depend on how the next four years go and who is on the GOP ticket in 2008.

True, but now the media and the Rats will just say that Jeb's exploiting the victims of Charley by indulging in a cheap political stunt.

Jeb is screwed either way. But the right thing to do is to stay and assist in the aftermath of Charlie.

IMHO

I completely agree - I was just indulging in a little frustration about how Jeb (or George) Bush can't win no matter what they do.

At least the leftists realized they wouldn't get anywhere in their pathetic attempts to blame the Bushs for Hurricane Charley.

What a shame Jeb can't be there for his brother's triumphant moment. Too bad he can't go up to NY only for a few hours.

With luck he will be by his brother's side as he is sown in for a second term next Jan 20 though.

Well, it is only fitting that Jeb should be there to deal with aftermath of the Hurricane he and his brother helped cause. [/liberal drivel]

Hurricane Andrew occurred during the final year of GHWB's presidency (Hurricane Hugo was during his first year as president). No catostrophic hurricanes occurred during BJ's presidency.

Conclusion: The Bush family, with the assistance of the Carlyle Group and the bin Laden family create hurricanes.

Damn, I bet if I could write a screenplay of this, fat@$$ Michael Moore would play plenty of money for it!

/major sarcasm off

I don't know about that. The timing of Hurricane Charley is suspicious!

Absolutely the right choice. Florida residents need to have their governor in the state right now.

Not sure why y'all saying that. Jeb is gov. How would that be construed as a "cheap political stunt" if he stays home in his home state which has been hit by a 'hugh' disaster.

The media and the Rats down here are grasping at straws these days. They despise Jeb almost as much as they despise his brother George, maybe even more so in a way because Jeb is very popular despite an avalanche of attacks and negativism that hasn't let up since he was sworn in for his first term. Their efforts to attack the Bushes by trying to paint the hurricane relief effort as an epic failure have themselves failed miserably. Hell, now they're whining about how well the relief effort has gone - claiming that it's political, and the only reason the Bushes care is that George needs to be able to steal some votes.

And just to make things even worse for them, they can feel Florida's 27 electoral votes slipping away from the Poodle. So yeah, they'll do what they can to try to make Jeb look calculating and conniving, and say that he's just grandstanding by not attending the RNC convention. All in all though, when the Rats are reduced to this kind of petty sniping and carping, I'd say things are going pretty well.
