Let us know when you have played against a 2 man team ON THE BEACH. It's hard enough to even WALK on sand for any length of time. 2 person VB is hard.
When you have beat the girls shown here, come pack and post about it.
Notice I didn't say after you had beat the GUYS.

Tell ya what, dude: You & Gubner McGreevey can put on your French Riviera thong bathing suits and play all the beach volleyball you want.

IMHO, anything that needs to be judged is not a sport. I can forgive the judging in the combat sports, because it's well, different.

All your sand are belong to us.
Bump for great justice.

And all their bums belong to us!

Go beach volleyball!

Oops.

Meant "Bumps" (not bums) but it works either way.

Maybe a freudian slip?

Does it require a very high level of athletic ability to perform at the top levels?

If so, it's a sport. If not, it's a skill

I can't agree with that definition. Ice skating takes incredible athleticism, but in the end, who wins and loses in ice skating is subjective. That to me disqualifies it from being a sport.

Please. Men traditionally wear trunks on the beach. They don't wear bikinis, because, quite frankly, they probably don't want to look 'gay'. They're wearing what they normally wear to play beach volleyball. Trying to make a case because men don't wear bikinis to play beach volleyball is incredibly weak.

Women wear bikinis because they are traditional beach wear for women. It works for their game. Bloomers went out a long time ago on the beach. Most men wear trunks on the beach, unless they are recipients of the 'international male' catalog.

And if you look at a communist country like china, which I doubt has to worry so much about 'eye candy' to sell products in a non-capitalist society, they were wearing almost identical outfits to the americans and every other international team. They're not wearing string bikinis, they're wearing the equivalent to a sport bra. And they're not wearing thongs for bottoms, they're wearing bikini type bottoms that are functional.

It fits their sport. And to go back to the original post, it is a sport. Anybody who tries to dispute that just looks moronic.

hell, slick willard and 3 of his clones couldn't beat mays/ walsh on their worst day.

They are an incredibly talented and dominating team that most whiners couldn't fathom going up against. They'd make the little whiners look like the girly men they are.

Some entrepreneur should paste those pictures onto vases.

Ya know, something for future archeologists to unearth and marvel at.

Officials play a role in virtually every sport. Bad and good calls are just a part of sports.

I had a chance to play the game on the primary LA beaches against some pretty good players back in the 90s. Kooks like you would show up now and then, but were never given a second glance.

It must burn to realize that not only are these great athletes, but most of them bought beach real estate during the depressed 90s and are probably each worth over a cool mil today.

......why they all wear what they wear: The traditional gym volleyball clothing is fine for larger teams, but with the incredible amount of running and jumping, they need something without alot of extra material to catch their hands as they're going for the ball. Form follows function, and they're not going to wear bloomers to placate the puritans.

Here is what the Australians wore at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games:

Perfectly "functional".

From the matches I saw in the 2004 Olympics, it seems that the Americans were the only team whose bottoms turned into thongs after the first jump.

Having cloth mixed with sand grinding away at your perineum is definitely not "functional".

I'm no Puritan. As a doctor, I see more naked women in one week than most men see in a lifetime.

However, I would prefer to have the U.S.A. represented with a little bit more class on the world stage.

It's unfortunate that they had to beat McPeak/Youngs of USA to get to the gold round, they were excellent also. I was glad to see they got the bronze. Go USA!

Why do they arrange events so that if the runner-up is the third-best contestant (as will often happen), the second-best contestant gets the Bronze? Shouldn't there be a game between the winner of the "bronze medal" game and the runner-up to determine who gets Silver and who gets Bronze?

Actually it would seem that for a contest with 16 entrants, the fairest pairing would be to run a "tree" on the 16 entrants (15 games). In this tree, the Gold winner will have played against four entrants; call them A, B, C, D (in order).

To decide Silver, A and B play; the winner of that match plays C; the winner of that match plays D. The winner of this match gets Silver (if it's B, C, or D, it will be the only contestant with a 4-1 record; if A, it will be the only person with a 3-1 record).

Bronze has different cases depending upon who won Silver. If A won Silver, then B and C should compete with the winner playing D.

If B won Silver, then A should compete with the person B beat in the first round. The winner of that should compete with C, and the winner of that play D.

If C won Silver, then the player C beat in round 1 should play whichever of A/B was beaten by C. The winner of that should play D.

If D won Silver, the first two players he beat in rounds 1 and 2 should play each other; the winner of that should play the person he beat in round 3; the winner of that plays the best of (ABC).

Thus, 23 games to find the top three finishers quite fairly regardless of original pairings.

You're a clueless idiot. And you are calling others a moron?

There is no "sport" value to having a bottom that is up your hind end so far it looks like a thong. The other poster called it right. It is to get attention.

You tried to make the case the "suits" were for athletic reasons, i.e. hands not getting caught, etc. Then you say the poster that rebutted you with the example of the men - who are even more athletic - was dumb for making the comparison.. Because of "traditions". Well which is it braniac? Tradition or utility?

Love or hate BVB, love or hate the eye candy, but don't be stupid enough to suggest the suits are for tradition or competitive edge. Oh.. and they dont have to wear bloomers to be able to cover their butts. Normal bikini bottoms do that nicely. These are not normal bikini bottoms.

Eye Candy???

I don't think so....

But a sport - yes it is FAR more of a "sport" than many Olympic events.

Is that why the women get skimpy, tight outfits and the men get full length shirts and long, baggy shorts??

Not fooling me! LOL
