Singapore Airlines Ltd. is expected to announce an order for 18 long-range Boeing 777 jetliners, perhaps as early as this week, a person familiar with the matter said Tuesday.
The deal is for 777-300ERS, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity. It could be worth between $3.7 billion and $4.1 billion at list prices, although airlines typically negotiate steep discounts.
Boeing spokesman Bob Saling declined to comment.
James Boyd, a spokesman for Singapore Airlines in Los Angeles, said the company had completed its evaluation of Boeing's sale proposal as well as one from European rival Airbus. He said an announcement will be made "once the process is finalized, which will be very soon." He declined to comment further.
The deal would be an especially sweet victory for Boeing because it shows the Chicago-based aerospace giant's ability to beat Airbus, said aerospace analyst Paul Nisbet with JSA Research in Rhode Island.
"It's a big feather in Boeing's cap," Nisbet said.
He said the deal likely followed intense negotiations from both airplane makers eager to win the order.
"Undoubtedly Airbus was pulling every string they knew how ... but it sounds like Boeing prevailed," Nisbet said.

Too bad.
Singapore Airlines is big on luxury - the 777 is a very comfortable plane. Not that the Airbus is bad, but first class seating in a 777 is the best flying experience available today.
The 777 is a piece of art in motion. Amazing range and fuel effeciencies. I think the 777 will be the most beautiful and one of the last in a phase of twin engined cylindrical fueselage jets. The 757 has the most beautiful lines in the frame but is only a 727 as far as the interior is concerned. The 777 is often a shock to seasoned road warriors, even in coach. Kudos Boeing!
Are you flying the 777 these days? More comfortable than an F-14, I suppose, but I hear they are lousy at doing a split-S. ;)
