DETROIT - A former member of Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's legal team pleaded innocent Tuesday to a charge of soliciting a prostitute.
Melvin "Butch" Hollowell, a former Michigan Democratic Party chairman, did not appear in court for his arraignment. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
The 44-year-old attorney stepped down last week from Kerry's legal team after he was pulled over by sheriff's deputies who said he picked up a woman not far from his home in Detroit's affluent Palmer Woods neighborhood.
His vehicle was impounded, but he was released after he and the woman were issued citations, sheriff's department spokesman John Roach said.
In a statement released last week, Hollowell called the incident "a gross misunderstanding." His attorney said the woman had appeared to be in trouble and that Hollowell was driving her to a police station.
If convicted, Hollowell could get up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.
Darn, and this guy would have made the perfect Attorney General. /sarcasm
If, by some miracle, it turns out that John Kerry is not a man of poor character... It is already obvious that he is on record as a man who is a poor judge of character.

My neighborhood isn't exactly affluent (although it's getting there). We have the occasional prostitute. In fact there's one that lived around the corner. Really sad. She's 20 years old, strung out on drugs and pregnant. Thing is, she'd really be pretty if she'd clean herself up. One time, when I was driving home about ten years ago, in the summer, I was stopped at a stop sign (or slowly rolling through it anyway) and this really attractive girl in a gingham dress asked me if I wanted a date. I was stunned, because that's not normally how a whore dresses. She looked very clean. I wonder if she was a cop. But cops can't approach you and ask for a date, can they? One other time I was propositioned by a very attractive woman on my way to the gym at 5 am. She looked like she'd been out all night, but not really beat up or anything. Wonder if she was a cop. I think Kerry is a poor judge of his own character. I personally believe his military service was honorable, but he seems to think it was exceptional.

Actually, Palmer Woods is breathtakingly beautiful. It is home to mansions from every Detroit family that you've heard of. Ford, Dodge, Hudson, Kresge (the "K" in "Kmart," etc. Unfortunately, it is right off of Woodward Avenue, the link from downtown all through the northern suburbs. There are a lot of seedy bars and adult bookstores nearby, thus the prostitutes.
I hope it stung when he lost in a landslide. Of course since then he's been one of the most partisan SOB's in Michigan politics. It caught up to him though, funny he needed a professional after the royal screwing his own party gave him this last year.
