Vanessa Kerry doesn’t try to hide her frustration with the recent criticism of her father’s war record.

There was a class on emergency vehicles and it said a cause of accidents around ambulances was people pulling out behind a passing ambulance without looking for additional traffic following behind the ambulance. I would like to talk, representing all those veterans, and say that several months ago in Detroit, we had an investigation at which over 150 honorably discharged and many very highly decorated veterans testified to war crimes committed in Southeast Asia, not isolated incidents but crimes committed on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of command....

They told the stories at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country.

I think Vanessa realizes that her Dad took the reality of his diving in a lake to save a gerbil, and turned it into the fiction of him diving in, under fire, to "save" Jim Rassman. Many children of liars first realize their parent's true nature when they hear family stories being transformed and exaggerated and told to others as obvious lies. My heart goes out to Vanessa. I wish her all the best as she begins to understand that her very own father is a complete fraud. One can only imagine how she already feels at having been declared illegitimate by her father's annulment from their mother.
