He could have. He would've been 18 in 1971. But it's unlikely.

I'm 53. Went over when I was 18 (1969). Yes, and I am certifiably nuts (Combat PTSD) as well as partially deaf (too close to incoming). However, I agree that the slandering of ALL Vets is a much greater sin than calling a buffoon to task.

Yes, It is possible, I refigured it and he falls into the tail end of the window.
After he finished training it is possible he could have been deployed.
We were pulling back in 72, and were totally out in 74 IIRC. He may have seen some action.
