.223 is a standard measurement (inches) which is roughly 5.56mm (the official NATO designation)

The SKs is only available in 7.62x39mm

Only the commie weapons use 7.62.39 while NATO uses the 5.56mm ammo almost exclusively

I'd start with a small one and work my way up.

Entry level M18 57MM Recoilless Rifle.

Experienced level M40A2 106MM Recoilless Rifle.

Expert level M50A1 "Ontos".

Would you consider 73mm SPG-9, little brother of main gun armament of the old BMP-1 and BMD-1 personnel carriers, to be similar startup equipment?

Well, it is a single shot so, it would be suitable for use by a beginner. I'm just a little concerned about the weight. If the shooter can shoulder fire it without too much difficulty, ok. The bulkyness however, may cause problems for the shooter at a hunter safety course or DCM Shoot. Even the smaller 57MM is out of the question for use at a CCW class.

Re. Airsoft needing tinkering;

Not a prob; I actually like to tinker!

Do you have any links / resources to "tinkering" tips, trick, etc.?

I already ordered one of the leapers .45 lookalikes from "Cheaper than Dirt" online for the heck of it; should be in by next week I suppose.

Have a couple of good pellet guns and they are fun - still need a bullet trap though, and riccochets can be hazzardous.
Here in the suburbs we have to be careful about playing with that sort of thing outside - more "progressive" Neighbors can get tense if they see anything that resembles a "gun".

Some years ago I had a window punched through by a kid from the next street behind us using a BB gun; somehow I don't think the AS would be as prone to collatteral damage.

You can probably find out anything that you want to about the care and feeding of Airsoft guns at MAAPR (Mid Atlantic Airsoft Player's Registry) Check their forums.
