Prosecutor under fire for anti-Kerry role (free speech attacked)

PORTLAND, Ore. - Several Vietnam veterans are calling for an assistant district attorney to resign after questions were raised about his statement in a recent ad criticizing Democrat John Kerry’s military service.

Alfred French of the Clackamas County district attorney’s office appears in the ad sponsored by the group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. In the spot, French says: “I served with John Kerry. ... He is lying about his record.”

A group of Vietnam veterans who protested outside the county courthouse Monday said French implied he had firsthand knowledge of Kerry’s war actions when in fact he had heard about what Kerry did from friends.

In an interview with The Oregonian newspaper last week, French said he relied on the accounts of three other veterans in making the statement about Kerry and did not personally witness the events. French did not return two messages left at his office Monday.

Sounds like French screwed up; as a prosecutor he should know the value of "hearsay."

He never made any affirmative statement that he had firsthand knowledge of the incidents. Just that he served with John Kerry. I admire his courage.

Every day, the air waves are filled with warnings, veiled and unveiled threats, spewed invective and hatred directed at any voice of dissent. And the public, like so many relatives and friends that I saw this weekend, sit in mute opposition and fear.

The rules in the court of public opinion are different than those in a court of law. So long as he did not misrepresent his knowledge of Kerry's actions I see no problem. Bob Dole wasn't on Kerry's boat either but I have no problem when he says that Kerry oughta stuff it!

***Kerry’s Vietnam Crewmates Testify To His Bravery

A documentary being released this week features Kerry's former crew mates vouching for his Vietnam war heroics.

"Brothers in Arms"-- a first film by journalist Paul Alexander -- features Kerry and four men who served with him on Patrol Craft 94.

It was the last of three boats he commanded during the war and the one from which he won the Silver Star for chasing down and killing a combatant who threatened his crew with a rocket.

A campaign ad sponsored by a group of swift boat veterans who did not serve directly under Kerry claims his wartime injuries and combat actions were exaggerated.

"Brothers in Arms" opens at a New York theater Friday -- just days before the Republican National Convention starts in the city.***Source

and how do we know they really ARE Vets as opposed to the usual union thugs they Democrats send around? Not that they can't be both, but the Dems have a way of sending their union goons to stir up trouble, rather than vets.

this "Brothers" business is really getting on my nerves. Even Rassmann acknowledged thirty years - three decades - passed without hearing from his Brother John, who adopted him only when he NEEDED him and the others. Kerry could only attend the swiftboat vet get-together long enough for the photo op. His loyalty to "his brothers" makes me ill.
