"If you already know all the details of a crime, the lie detector test wouldn't work on you." A lie detector test does not work on anyone, as there is no such thing as a lie detector. The best an examiner could hope for is to eliminate all possible reasons for stress on a question except for stress caused by untruthful or evasive answers.
Even then, the truth examination means nothing unless the examiner is able to secure an admission of guilt or guilty knowledge.
In brief, no stress usually means a truthful answer, but not absolutely. A stress answer does not mean that that the subject is lying. It only means that the subject stressed on the question and it remains for the examiner to determine why through a post-test interview/interrogation. If the stress remains on a second test and the examiner is unable to obtain an admission of guilt on a follow-up interview, the test must be called 'inconclusive.'
The examiner is really the 'lie detector,' not the instrument. It's a mind-game between the examiner and the subject.
Strangely enough, even if the subject knows all this ahead of time, they will still stress on hot questions.
