ISLAMABAD, Pakistan Aug. 23, 2004 — Pakistani troops acting on a tip raided a terrorist hideout Monday in a remote tribal region, sparking a shootout that left four foreigners dead and several wounded, an army spokesman said. The operation was launched after intelligence reports said some foreign fighters were hiding on the outskirts of Miran Shah, the main town in North Waziristan a tribal region in Pakistan's northwest near the border with Afghanistan, said Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan.

He described the assault as successful, and said the bodies of the four slain men were recovered.

"The raid also netted (alive) two terrorists, including a foreigner," Sultan told The Associated Press. He refused to disclose their identities or nationalities.

Later, the Pakistan army said troops also seized rocket launchers, assault files and other ammunition, after demolishing the terrorist hideout in Miran Shah.

It gave no further details, and it was not clear who the killed and captured men were.

Pakistan Raids Terror Hideout; 4 Killed Pakistani Forces Kill Four Foreign Terrorists in Raid on Hideout in Remote Tribal Region

The Associated Press

Pakistan is a key ally of the United States in its war on terror. The raid in North Waziristan came two days after Pakistan said it foiled a plot by al-Qaida-linked militants to carry out suicide attacks on key government leaders and the U.S. Embassy earlier this month.

A dozen people, including an Egyptian, were captured in raids in various parts of the country that uncovered the plot, Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayyat said Saturday.

The suspects planned to sabotage Aug. 14 Independence Day celebrations and to target President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, U.S. embassy and other important installations in the capital, Islamabad, and the nearby city of Rawalpindi, Hayyat said.

Also Saturday, troops backed by artillery and aircraft attacked two suspected terrorist hideouts in South Waziristan, a tribal region located near North Waziristan, killing and wounding a number of militants.

The attack was launched near Shakai in South Waziristan, the scene of several military counterterrorism operations against al-Qaida fugitives in the recent months.

Pakistan has deployed thousands of troops along its border with Afghanistan to stop terrorists from entering its territory and the government has said its military operation in the country's tribal regions would continue until the foreign terrorists and their local supporters are captured or eliminated.

(Corrects 3rd paragraph to delete incorrect reference to six dead. The army said two were captured, not killed.)

We watched a 2 hour show on the History Channel last night about OBL and the places in which AQ has hidden. It is clear that Pakistan has a problem they have been addressing very well. I don't think the United States has gotten rid of the sleeper AQ terrorists in THIS country as well as Pakistan is working to rid the country of AQ.

Thanks for the post. We are using the keyword Rounduptime to keep tabs on the killing/capturing etc of AQ and Taliban members. That way we can find all the relevant post quickly.

I noted on the main thread that I think this is the same event as described in post #842. What is interesting here is that the MSM is paying more attention than usual, I think.
