Agnew pretty much shot himself in the foot. I've never seen anything arguing that Agnew was innocent. He was, however, classy enough to resign and leave politics without whining.
Uh, classy is not a word to be used in connection to Agnew. He was the forerunner to McGreevy in the corruption and sleaze dept. (not including the gay sex part)
