Karnow is horrible, who from the Kerry side thought he'd be helpful? His argument is "lots of people opposed the war, so therefore it was okay for Kerry to lie about what our troops did there".

I'm sure he'd be similarly unconcerned if a Swift Boat Vet with as many medals as Kerry were caught in a major lie.
True. But deserving of the PH because it occured in the "heat of battle." Kerry's self-inflicted wounds did not, so arguably he did not deserve the PH's, and thereby, his early ticket home.
The question here isn't "did he get a boo-boo?", but who wrote it up.
