Not true.

At that point in time, he would have already gotten his National Service Medal.

By going into the Vietnam operating area, he qualified for the Vietnam Service Medal (with one bronze star) and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

I have to agree on that point. When I joined the reserves, I also got the National Defense Medal.
