How is it unrealistic? I've found that most people who can't do Atkins have failed to do any research and have poor imaginations when it comes to cooking. Sure, if you are a meat and potatoes kind of person, dropping the potato is a pain. finding something to replace it on the plate won't give you exactly what your looking for. However, Cauliflower tastes pretty good and helps fill you up. People get this weird idea that Atkins is all about Meat, eggs, cheese and nothing else. That's B.S. You could potentially eat a Vegan diet and still keep your carbs low.
I wouldn't be pontificating the virtues of the diet if it didn't do wonders for my wife and I. Both of us lost roughly 50lbs (each) on it. The diet is realistic, if you have a little self control around french fries, potato chips, candy, bread, and rice. (Those are the things that strained me the most.)
Don't be afraid to try new things, some of the best meals I've eaten in the last year have been things my wife and I made from recipes on the Atkins site that I probably wouldn't have touched otherwise. (Who knew Zucchini and blue cheese can come together in a soup to taste that good?)
I would have to guess the greatest success of Atkins with me was my appetite, it dropped down incredibly. For those that think it's just eggs, meat, and cheese, explore a little and don't accept this stuff you hear about it being high protein only - it can be if that's what you want, but it doesn't have to be at all.
Tell me about it! My wife and I both have experienced things that make us say "Wow!" afterwords. I can run to my car from my office without loosing my breath - about 150yds - and I don't excersise. Before I lost the weight running across the road to avoid traffic tired me out. My wife ran to a restroom recently (close to 200yds) and experienced the same thing. I feel much better now overall.
There's always going to be a core that sticks to it. But low fat doesn't rule the roost like it used to. I remember in the heyday of low fat spending 5 minutes combing through the sausage section on a desperate search for one damn non-turkey/non-low fat/ keilbasa and finding none, now I go to that section and there are still the low-fat and turkey keilbasas (and they still taste like wood) but you can actually find a whole subsection of good old fashioned fatty sausages the way God intended.
