Kobe Bryant's nameless accuser
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 08/22/2004 | Vicki Haddock

Not naming Kobe Bryant's accuser is becoming almost pointless.

As Bryant's trial is scheduled to begin this week in Eagle County, Colo., every major newspaper, newsmagazine, network and cable outlet still is keeping it taboo to release the name of the woman who reported the basketball star raped her. Even when bumblers in the courthouse inadvertently keep disseminating it to reporters covering the pending case and even when she filed a civil suit seeking monetary damages from Bryant under the name "Jane Doe."

What the media have proceeded to do instead is to produce a paint-by- numbers portrait: her age, her job at the Lodge & Spa at Cordillera where the rape allegedly occurred, her college, her former high school, and the fact that she sang in the school choir, auditioned for "American Idol," was so distraught over a breakup with a previous boyfriend and the death of a friend that she sought counseling, and also perhaps that she favored the color teal and the ice cream flavor Rocky Road. In addition, the Colorado Supreme Court affirmed last week that the jury -- and hence, the media and the public -- could hear details of the woman's sexual activity around the time she had her encounter with Bryant....

And isn't it only fair to name an accuser, given that the accused is publicly named and his reputation irrevocably tarnished before a trial can determine his guilt or innocence?

Add up all the salacious published details, catch the peek-a-boo coverage on cable, surf the flood of personal information about Bryant's accuser on the Web. It's difficult to imagine that the hardship on the woman could have been any greater had the mainstream media identified her by name. Today, being named is the least of her problems.

Using the name "Jane Doe" for this golddigger is ridiculous. The entire rape shield laws should be revised.

Good article on the issue of rape-shield laws, although it only looks at if from the side of the raped woman.

There are several arguements for keeping rape-shield laws in place, one of them being that women won't come forward if the laws aren't in place. But what about men that are falsely accused of rape? I think this trial is going to bring that to light.

"And the supreme irony is that her identity is hardly secret."

No, the supreme irony is that your article failed to mention her name.

Golddigger?

If she's a golddigger, it seems to me that she's going about it the wrong way. No matter how the criminal case turns out (if it even continues), Kobe's going to fight the civil case with everything he's got -- he'll spend $10 million to avoid paying her $1.

Nah, if she were after his money, she'd do it like the victims of Michael Jackson -- out of court and everybody shuts up.

When the criminal charges are dismissed, or when Kobe is acquitted, her name will be fair game. She will lose her "rape shield" protection and her real name should be on the court docket of any civil case. However, if you are really interested, google +kobe +accuser and you know the name of "Jane Doe."

Why is her name & picture so important to you? Are you a stalker?. She was a teenager when Kobe raped her and even by remaining anonymous, some creeps managed to get her phone number and threatened her life. What's wrong with you? I think that you're a lot more dangerous than Kobe...get a life/

What is wrong with you? Why do you defend this slut?

She may be a slut to you but she is a victim to me. To call this girl names makes you look small.

If I may dare to ask, this woman is a victim of what?

If the victim is such a bad person, what was Laie doing with her?. Like they say, show me who your friends are and I'll tell you who you are.... she's brave now she knows Lin Wood won't sue her, probably doesn't have a pot to piss in....bring on someone else with better credibility.

I wonder how much KB is paying these girls to spread lies on the victim.

I am with you, Chantal.

One would think the poor woman was the one accused of a crime from the way the Kobe-bots do the work of their idol by smearing her.

"Victims" don't sleep around with a couple of other people after being "assaulted." "Victims" don't go to parties the next day and boast about their encounters. "Victims" don't tell lurid stories about their latest conquest's genitalia. "Victims" don't soon thereafter text message their boyfriend and share the dirty little details. "Victims" don't go out of their way to arrange a sexual encounter with a celebrity.
