China Preparing for Confrontation With US, Taiwan PM Says

Pacific Rim Bureau (CNSNews.com) - Taiwan's prime minister has accused China of preparing for a possible confrontation with the United States by sending Navy research vessels to map underwater terrain in the western Pacific, Taiwanese media reported Monday.

Premier Yu Shyi-kun was quoted as making the remarks to a group of Taiwanese during a stopover in New York City Saturday.

He said Chinese oceanic research ships had intruded into Taiwanese territorial waters on numerous occasions, and had also entered Japan's territorial waters a total of 21 times during 2003-4.

According to Taipei's Central News Agency, Yu said Beijing's aim was to break the U.S. defense line in the western Pacific - a line that runs through Taiwan, Japan and the Philippines.

Another Taiwanese outlet, the China Times, quoted him as saying: "Communist Chinese forces are coming to the Pacific Ocean for a confrontation with the United States. This causes a threat to security in the Asia Pacific.

"For the sake of world peace, for the sake of peace and stability in the Asia Pacific, and for the sake of global military security, the Americans must stand behind Taiwan."

Yu's three-stay break on the way home from a visit to Taiwanese allies in the Caribbean and Central America came despite Beijing's strong opposition to such stopovers, which it sees as an attempt to circumvent restrictions on official visits to the U.S.

Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian plans to visit Latin America next week, and has requested stopovers in Hawaii en route, and again in Seattle on the way home.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan last week urged Washington not to allow Taiwanese leaders "to engage in separatist activities" during stopovers.

"The use of stopovers by the Taiwan authorities as an excuse to conduct activities splitting China and sabotaging China-U.S. relations is a trick they have consistently been using," Kong said.

Longstanding tensions across the Taiwan Strait have heightened in recent months, and China has repeatedly called on the U.S. to stop actions which it sees as encouraging independence elements in Taiwan.

Since it recognized communist China in 1979 the U.S. has not had formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but it is obliged by law to help it to defend itself.

Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Sunday China was determined, and had the ability, to crush any attempt by Taiwan to declare independence.

If we just keep trading and trading and increasing the trade deficit more and more towards China's advantage they won't dream of attacking the hand that feeds the horse's mouth - right!?

Ten years ago, I would be laughing. China's ICBM program s quickly approaching the lethality of ours. Their nuclear submarine program is getting off to a good start also.

Mostly using technology stolen from us during the clinton years.

What better time for them to try to re-attach Taiwan?

What are we going to do about it?

The Chinese are pulling the same thing the Japanese did in the 1930's and we are complicit in their actions. We are selling them the raw materials which they will use to attack us with.

I cynically bet we blink when China goes after Taiwan. I bet they take it with nothing except bluster on our part.

And I hope to hell I am wrong.

I believe that history will be kind to Dubya, and will look at Clinton poorly.
