REDWOOD CITY -- Mark Geragos' challenge today: Cross-examining a witness who, instead of testifying, largely sat in court for five days while the jury heard hours of phone calls she secretly recorded.
That's what Scott Peterson's attorney will face, when -- barring another delay in the death-penalty trial -- he confronts star prosecution witness Amber Frey.
Relying heavily on 40 calls Peterson's former girlfriend taped -- all but one in the weeks after Peterson's pregnant wife disappeared -- lets prosecutors use his words against him while blunting potential attacks on Frey's credibility, legal analysts said.
"It was smart, and it's probably frustrating to Geragos," former San Francisco Assistant District Attorney James Hammer said. "It's especially a clever move if the DA has some questions about whose side she's on."
Peterson's attorneys have suggested Frey began taping calls to Peterson weeks before his wife disappeared, was not forthcoming about when she learned he was married and might have withheld information from police.
Frey testified that she called Modesto police early Dec. 30, 2002, after receiving information about Peterson from........

Amber Frey might be America's victim-du-jour of a smooth-talking, champagne-popping cad. But she has plenty of company.
And it's a good bet that some of the 12 people sitting in judgment of Frey's shark-in-a-tux, Scott Peterson, have first- or secondhand knowledge of Romeos who turned out to be worms.
It really is that common, experts say. Who hasn't dated, or known someone who dated, a guy who said and did all the right things before a hasty exit, leaving his castoff wondering what happened?
"Most women have experienced being lied to by a guy," said Katherine Ramsland, who teaches forensic psychology at DeSales University in Pennsylvania......

SACRAMENTO -- Lawmakers are preparing to vote as early as Monday on a financial bailout for the Scott Peterson double-murder trial.
Two bills that would provide state aid to police and prosecutors have been filed in the waning days of the 2004 legislative session at the behest of Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Merced, and other lawmakers who represent Stanislaus County.
The bills -- one is a backup measure -- would let Stanislaus County officials immediately tap into a $5 million state fund set aside for expensive murder trials in smaller and medium-sized counties.
Gov. Schwarzenegger supports the idea. He included a guaranteed reimbursement for the Peterson case in his proposed budget, but lawmakers stripped it out because of the potential price tag.
State and local officials have estimated total costs in excess of $2 million so far, as the trial enters its 13th week of testimony. Law enforcement officials aren't providing a detailed breakdown of their costs, citing a court-imposed gag order in the case..........

US viewers captivated by the trial that has everything
US viewers captivated by the trial that has everything

It is a case with all the ingredients of a Hollywood script or a prime-time soap: a love triangle, a double murder, tapped telephone calls and an attractive, youthful cast.
America is agog at the trial of Scott Peterson, 31, the former fertiliser salesman accused of killing his heavily pregnant wife and unborn son and dumping them in the ocean so that he could be with his mistress, a blonde masseuse. He faces possible execution if convicted.
Nearly three months into the California trial, most of the nation appears convinced of Peterson's guilt. He told police he was out fishing the day his wife, Laci, 27, vanished, close to the spot where, four months later, her body and that of the couple's unborn son, whom she had........

(Court TV) Legal experts and trial watchers continue to speculate on the outcome of the Scott Peterson (news - web sites) murder case. But what about those willing to lay down money on their opinions? What do gamblers see in store for the fertilizer salesman?
Judging by Vegas odds, Peterson will be found guilty.
"For the past few months, the lines have favored a guilty verdict for Scott Peterson," said a gambling agent at BetOnSports.com.
The British online gaming site, which maintains an office in Costa Rica, gets its odds from bookies in Las Vegas.
"Like in sports, the odds change now and then based on the condition of the team and other factors," the agent, who identified himself only as J.P., said. "But on Peterson they've been pretty consistent."
The double-murder trial now in its 12th week in Redwood City, Calif., has enticed gamblers from all over the world to stake a bet on the jury's findings. ......

Amber Frey is no angel. And her lawyer is doing her no favors. She needs to tell Glorida Allred to quit having those impromptu press conferences. Allred, according to Stan Goldstein, is committing ethical violations. Gag Order for Gloria is in order! Frey is going to be fried today. I have absolutely NO sympathy for her. She has had two kids out of wedlock, and trusted this madman with her infant daughter after just one date. She is a cheap slut, IMO.
Wow RB I feel like I just traveled through time.
Just finished reading the 400 posts from the last thread and you were off to Vegas!
Are You Back? Have Fun?
Did Amber get a nose job? Seems that hawky bump is gone.
I got flamed for saying similar things after seeing her attitude in her coming out press conference last year.
Yeah two out of weedlock kids and dating a married man, permissive morals indeed.
Doesn't make it right, but if she doesn't rely on the government for payouts, ie welfare, then what is her private life is her private life. If she can handle it, then good for her.
I tend not to judge those who make or break their lives, other than criminals!
As for Gloria Allred, she is not bound by a GAG order from what I understand BUT, nor does she, or as much as I have listened to her, speak out beyond the aspects of what was said from the daily court hearings. Only commenting on given testimony as it recorded into the case.

Hey TS can you do a side by side pic of the old Amber and the now Amber with a good view of her nose.
I think she use to have a real hook beak but it seems to have dissapeared. Wondering if she had it fixed while busy having second fatherless child.
And what do her morals have to do with Scott killing his wife? Are you saying that she wasn't worth enough for Scott to have killed Laci?
Because if you are, that's exactly what the defense wants the Jury to think.
sw
She didn't get a nose job, she just went to the Paula Jones finishing school for wayward young ladies.
I had fun, but did about 10 miles of walking or so it seems. At the Excalibur we walked all the way to the Las Vegas Hilton to get tickets to watch the Sinbad show. We took a taxi back... then to go back we were taking the monorail but got lost in directions to hook up at the MGM, or Paris hotel... Had to walk almost all the way around the buidling to finally catch the monorail to the Hilton for the show. The slots, naw, not much winnings, but okay fun. It was too much of people crowds all over the place there. Cab drivers were over worked for the weekend they told us. The early morning flight home, never again. Rather take a late afternoon back home. The airports, procedures are night&day at each one. Sacramento was top notch, sort of, Las Vegas, quick thru, but security checks there. Worth the short hop over and back vs driving. I'd do it again. :o)
I was really willing to cut her slack for oops child out of wedlock number 1 but she seems to rather prefer living a secular life, her choice.
She is not as fresh as a daisy and as it seems her relationships last about four months I wouldn't expect that is going to change in her future.
Men will ben men and if she is easy they are going to hit it.
Then when someone of interest comes along as men will be men and thinks of all the deposits made into his special gal before him he is most likely to just say "no thanks".
She keeps this up and she will have to be rich enough to buy a man.
Wonder if she had her HIV/AIDS test after Scott. Of coarse he hadn't done time so he was still a virgin in that sense.
Too many people in this culture refuse to judge others. I am judging Amber Frey. Amber Frey is not a very good parent, or role model. Period. She threw away any right to privacy when she hired Gloria Allmouth. Amber Frey is caught up in an American tragedy, and she does NOT deserve any sympathy. No, she is not guilty of any crimes. Just guilty of terribly bad and DANGEROUS judgment. I will not be an Amber fan, which is what Allmouth is trying to orchestrate through her p.r. stunts. BTW, is Allmouth getting paid for her services? Someone needs to find out exactly how Amber can afford her. Always follow the money.
not very nice....
Your right that Amber's private choices are her own morally speaking.
What I see is frustrating is she wants to get married and have a family and she is going about it the wrong way.
She is making choices that are going to be very painful for her and her kids down the road.
Now if she is choosing to be sexually active with many men and have kids along the way and is independant on herself for economical thriving then hey Kuma Sultra Amber. Gain some financial padding from the top nudie mag too.
