[snip]Dole, a former Kansas senator, said Kerry brought the attack ads on by hyping his Vietnam service.
"I said months ago, 'John, don't go too far,' " Dole said. "And I think he's got himself into this wicket now where he can't extricate himself because not every one of these people can be Republican liars."
Kerry spokesman Chad Clanton said, "It's unfortunate that Sen. Dole is making statements that official U.S. Navy records prove false. This is partisan politics, not the truth."
In another development, the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, whose two ads blasting Kerry's war record have rocked the presidential campaign, deny Democrats' claims that they're props for the GOP.
"Our message is our message and no one tells us what to say," Swift Boat vet Van Odell said on "Fox News Sunday."
A CBS poll shows Kerry's support among veterans has dropped 10 points since the group began advertising.
Kerry launched a new ad yesterday after his first damage-control ad last week did little to raise his poll numbers.
The new ad features President Bush and John McCain, with a narrator saying, "Bush smeared John McCain four years ago. Now, he's doing it to John Kerry."
That spot, which implies that the Bush campaign is behind the Swift Boat ads, is designed to make it appear that McCain is bashing Bush. McCain heads Bush's re-election bid in Arizona and has asked Kerry not to use him in the Democratic ads.
The Bush campaign criticized the ad as "false and libelous."

Well Gee .. The media FAILED to tell us that part
Kerry won't pull his ad, he has yet to follow through with a request from several Swift Boat Veterans who's faces appear on pictures on Kerry's website to not use their photo's for political gain. Vietnam Veterans who are not even a part of the SBVFT.
Democrats play by a different set of rules.
They aren't props for the GOP, many of the Swiftee's are registered Democrat. Heck, John O'Neill was a John Edwards supporter.
What breathtaking hypocrisy. Bush is supposed to demand that the SVFT ads come down, even though he is legally forbidden from doing so. Meanwhile, McCain asks Kerry not to use him in his ads, and the Dems essentially tell him to take a flying leap!
"Bush smeared John McCain four years ago. Now, he's doing it to John Kerry."
NO, that ad is powerful and only McCain can rightfully denounce it.
This ad was edited like a Micheal Moore movie. By that I mean, everything was taken out of context.
"NO, that ad is powerful and only McCain can rightfully denounce it."
I disagree, the only people who will understand it will not change their mind about that incident.
McCain has denounced it too! By saying he doesn't want his image featured in a Democrat ad! :)
They wasted a bunch of money on this ad IMHO. It won't entice any new voters into their rolls, especially the undecideds.
Then McCain had better tell the Kerry people to pull the ad or to remove the headshot of McCain.
Then disagree we shall.
It is powerful, albeit an unconscionable smear.
I agree it is powerful .. but I also think it will backfire on Kerry by pulling McCain into this
Especially IF McCain speaks up and denounces it.
The ad is totally out of context, whether McCain is in it or not.
I will admit I haven't seen the ad, but I have read the transcript of the exchange between Bush and McCain from that ad side by side with the full transcript of the 2000 debate the videoclip is from, at Bob Jones Univ. in SC.
Powerful in what way? McCain lost SC not because of what McCain said Bush did in SC, McCain lost SC because he was too liberal.
