New book criticizes President (Buchanan again!)
Fort Worth Star- Telegram ^ | 8/23/2004 | David Kirkpatrick

Posted on 08/22/2004 10:29:33 AM PDT by sinkspur

Patrick Buchanan, the conservative commentator whose Republican primary challenge and divisive convention speech weakened the first President Bush's campaign for re-election in 1992, is publishing a book excoriating the second President Bush over the invasion of Iraq, just in time to grab a share of the limelight at another Republican convention.

In Where the Right Went Wrong, released late last week, Buchanan calls the invasion of Iraq "the greatest strategic blunder in 40 years, a mistake more costly than Vietnam. If prudence is the mark of a conservative, Mr. Bush has ceased to be a conservative," Buchanan wrote. The release of the book, which coincides with the Republican National Convention, gives Buchanan occasion to lay out his case on television and in book promotions just as the Bush campaign seeks to project an image of unity, reviving unhappy memories of the disruptive role Buchanan has played in the past.

"He has a following in conservative circles," said Paul Weyrich, a veteran conservative organizer. "It is not what it once was just because the religious right is not particularly enamored with him. But it is going to have an effect. In a very close election, criticism from anybody who is credible is going to have an effect."

In an interview, however, Buchanan said publishing a book during the campaign was the best way he knew to inject what he considers important ideas into the debate. "The reason I wanted it out now is, it addresses big issues that are not being addressed in this campaign: the massive and growing deficit, the disintegration of the culture and a Wilsonian foreign policy that means war ad infinitum," he said.

"Those who support him, directly or indirectly like the third parties, are just as dangerous."

You're right. And I wonder if their consciences will trouble them at all when they see young soldiers and Marines hauled off to Belgium to be tried by a bunch of Euro-elitists.

You know, I could sit here all day and nitpick every little thing that GWB has done that I don't like. But I know that he loves this country and I know that he will do whatever he has to do to protect it. And that is what matters most to me right now.

You and yours have a pleasant evening...I must leave this buchanan thread. I'm sure his pet monkeys will be back soon enough to shriek their support of him.Keep them honest. Oops...that's impossible.

The "lesser of two evils" garbage is part II of the "not a dime's worth of difference" line.

If you can't see the obvious differnces between the Democrats and the Republicans, you have much larger issues than any I could actually resolve for you.

"Near as I can see, you aren't America's favorite anything."

But unlike Pat, he doesn't think that he is.

Yes, you would. People who like to use the term "true conservative" usually do buy into that kind of BS.

In a few posts, he'll have "principles", too.

but i am in fact someone who voted for Bush in 2000 and 'won't be fooled again'. There are many of us out there and the fact that the GOP thinks they can ignore us might be the reason they lose.

Can you say ."I am really a Kerry supporter"? Sure you can....and are.

It sounds like you have a problem...

I said he did a good job that night, too.

But everybody knows that the ONLY way Pat Buchanan can make money is by bashing Bush.

He tried to deny Bush the presidency in 2000 -- and now he's going to do it again so he and Bay can keep living the life they've grown accustomed to; never mind it's on the backs of others.

Despicable.

Interesting. While he does seem to do a fair amount of Bush bashing, he also apparently argues that Bush should be reelected.

From Drudge:

On the Conservative Case for Bush:

"George W. Bush is a God-fearing and good man....He kept his commitment to cut taxes....He has revived an economy sinking into recession when he took office. He has chosen fine judges. His willingness to accept international abuse by rejecting the Kyoto Protocol and the International Criminal Court show him to be a patriot who will not yield national sovereignty." (251)

"If George Bush is reelected and the Senate that confirms new justices remains Republican, there is the chance...the curtain may be brought down on the court's fifty-year run as battering ram of social revolution." (252)

"There is simply nothing that [Kerry-led Democrat] party offers to the Right." (252)

So, it sounds like a mixed bag, but the media will emphasize the negative stuff against Pres. Bush.

For the most part, I think Buchanan is a bit out there, on Israel, free trade, and a number of other issues...but I do think he has been proven right about what he said in 1992 regarding the culture war.

Sometimes I wonder if you people would have voted for Clinton if he was a Republican.

The answer is yes. They would claim 9/11 changed everything.

It's glaring.....

Willie, have you given any thought to what effect Buchanan's book will have on the moral of our troops fighting over seas? What's the difference between Kerry calling the war in Viet Nam wrong in 1971 and Pat Buchanan calling the war in Iraq wrong today?

Buchanan has a long history of betraying people he worked for, his political parties, his causes, his principles, and now his country during a time of war.

Your support of him speaks volumes about you.
