CA: Maloofs set sights on the young and hip

By hooking up with a proposed San Pablo Indian casino, the Maloof family is adding another piece to its fast-growing portfolio of sports, entertainment and gambling.

The family has already established its ability to blend fun and games, with ownership of the Kings and Monarchs basketball teams, a Las Vegas casino and hotel, and a New Mexico beer and liquor distributorship.

Next in the Maloof pipeline are a TV production company, record label and recording studio.

Experts doubt the Bay Area casino, which the Maloofs will help manage for the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians, will have the same celebrity vibe as other Maloof properties. The casino will cater to a blue-collar clientele, gaming industry observers believe.

But the San Pablo casino, which is expected to be California's largest, could include a trendy nightclub similar to one at the Palms, the Maloof casino and hotel in Las Vegas, said William Thompson, a University of Nevada, Las Vegas, professor who follows the gambling industry.

The Maloofs have zeroed in on popular culture as an identity for their properties, said Paul Swangard, managing director of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon.

"They're in the sweet spot of the culture engine," Swangard said. "They've grabbed the confluence of what's hip today with the younger generation. That's a good strategy."

The Maloofs declined to be interviewed for this article, but several family members have said in the past that they hope to leverage themselves into a sports-and-entertainment brand that cross-pollinates the show business spectrum.

Peter Jennings' second wife was a Maloof, a photographer and photojournalist.

Was she related to this particular set of Maloofs? In Lebanon, the name is as common as "Jones" is here. My cousin is married to one, a real nice hard-working family guy. I think most of them are Maronite Christians rather than Mahometans.

And they want California taxpayers to build them a new arena?

Shove it.

I agree 100%. We're supposed to pay for a new arena for these multimillionaires? They even have the gall to say that Arco arena is falling apart. Then they walk out of the city council meeting where a councilman had the nerve to put a cap on the price and the amount the public would pay. The Kings can leave for all I care.

Only the eleceted idiots like our 'Mayor' Heather Fargo think a new stadium will benefit the people that live here. Ask the people of Greece how much money the Olympics bring in.
