IMAGINE IF supporters of Bill Clinton had tried in 1996 to besmirch the military record of his opponent, Bob Dole. After all, Dole was given a Purple Heart for a leg scratch probably caused, according to one biographer, when a hand grenade thrown by one of his own men bounced off a tree. And while the serious injuries Dole sustained later surely came from German fire, did the episode demonstrate heroism on Dole's part or a reckless move that ended up killing his radioman and endangering the sergeant who dragged Dole off the field?
The truth, according to many accounts, is that Dole fought with exceptional bravery and deserves the nation's gratitude. No one in 1996 questioned that record. Any such attack on behalf of Clinton, an admitted Vietnam draft dodger, would have been preposterous.
Yet amazingly, something quite similar is happening today as supporters of President Bush attack the Vietnam record of Senator John Kerry.
The situations are not completely parallel. Bush was not a draft dodger, but he certainly was a Vietnam avoider, having joined the Texas Air National Guard rather than serving in the regular military.
Kerry, on the other hand, may have done more than Dole to qualify as a genuine war hero. Although his tour in Vietnam was short, on at least two occasions he acted decisively and with great daring in combat, saving at least one man's life and earning both a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. That's not our account or Kerry's; it is drawn from eyewitnesses and the military citations themselves.

The truth is Kerry (unlike Dole)left Nam after 3 months skipping with three poached Purple Hearts while Bob Dole left on a stretcher. Dole was in the hospital for over a year. Dole almost died. Dole never slandered his comrades.

I am assuming that this Bob Dole bit isn't isolated, but that the Globe has an advance copy of next week's Talking Points Memo...
If so, the Bush campaign should demand that Kerry denounce these attacks on Bob Dole.
I'm not sure this author is in full possession of his wits. If he was, he would realize that the issue of Kerry's heroism is being questioned because it may not have happened as described by Kerry in his reports.
At issue is the degree of heroism, but whether or not that heroism had been manufactured. There is nothing heroic about running down a wounded VC, unless it is done in the face of enemy fire, while surrounded by the enemy... and really - only if he wasn't wounded. So, if there was only a single wounded enemy and no others, then chasing him down when it was no longer necessary is not heroism, it is only prudence... It is war after all, and a wounded but armed enemy is a danger. But heroic? Hardly.
The incident with Rassman... It is heroic if Kerry rescued him while enemy bullets were flying all around him, but if enemy fire was lacking... It was only pulling Rassman from a river where John Kerry's skills as skipper put him in the first place. So, it isn't a question of degree, it is an issue of whether or not the heroics actually happened.

Am I the only one that remembers when the media attacked Bush 41's military record??? I don't remember the exact details, but during the 92 election campaign the press floated the idea that then president Bush had committed war crimes while serving in WWII...
Yup. This is sick. this is so sick. Bob Dole isn't in this fight, he's an old man with use of only one arm since he was a young man. He almost died fighting fascists, he's never been anything but a good, loyal American. This is such a gutter thing to do. I am simply disgusted with Kerry and the people who prop him up. If we are still a great country, these lousy bastards have to go down in flames.
The media claimed that Bush41 murdered his co-pilot and then ejected from his plane before it crashed.
I swear, if I didn't have kids going back to school, I'd go the the rally Sept.12 to show my support, as the daughter of a Korean War vet.
