Zappa was convicted and briefly jailed for producing an obscene audio tape recording (of him and his girlfriend making love), circa 1963. It was meant as a harmless joke. This might help explain Zappa's need to push the boundaries of bad taste, and the anger, in much of his lyrics. However, Zappa did a lot of brilliant instrumental work.
