(CA)Assemblyman's letter calls for condom use in porn films

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - A state Assemblyman has sent a letter to the adult entertainment industry asking it to adopt safe-sex measures or face the possibility of a state law that would push performers to use condoms.

Assemblyman Paul Koretz, chairman of the Labor and Employment Committee, said adult film stars should receive workplace health-and-safety protections, just like other Californians.

"I strongly encourage and fully expect the adult entertainment industry to require the use of condoms," said Koretz, a Democrat from West Hollywood, in a letter mailed to 185 porn producers and publishers Monday. "Failure to do so is irresponsible and invites the Legislature to exercise its authority to mandate more stringent actions."

Koretz's comments follow a recent HIV scare that prompted producers to stop filming for a few weeks. Two actors tested positive for the virus.

Many adult film companies believe using condoms would hurt their profits because they say their customers prefer scenes without them.

"I don't think it's the place of the authorities to decide whether the (actors) are to use condoms or not," said Lexington Steele, president of Mercenary Pictures, who, like many other producers, believes that requiring condom use would hurt profits.

Others reacted with indifference, expressing doubts that a law mandating condom use could be enforced.

"I appreciate what the assemblyman is doing," said Larry Flynt, owner of his porn publishing and video empire, in a statement provided through a spokeswoman. "But I want to know: Who is going to put the condoms on the actors? Is he going to come down here and do it himself?"

Despite the scare, the number of adult performers working in Southern California remains unchanged at about 1,200, according to the Adult Industry Medical Health Care Foundation, a clinic that provides HIV testing for performers.

Before this year's outbreak, 17 percent of performers used condoms. Immediately after production resumed, 22 percent used condoms, but the level has since dropped back down to 17 percent.

Gee...and all this time the Leftists have been whining that only Republicans try to stick the government's nose in the bedroom...

Funny how the "mainstream" media thinks it's a "good thing" when the Democrats do something, but "unnecessarily invasive" when the Republicans do it.

Because they make you wear a condom? You could try those little blue pills if it's that bad and you want to keep the job.

Nevada will become the new center of the adult film business, and California legislators will wonder what happened to the tax revenue.

And Willie Green will be able to post articles about the number of unemployed porn actors.

Next thing you know, they'll require porn flicks to have a plot. What's the world coming to?

"This is just an excuse for the assemblymen to watch porn flicks during subcommittee meetings."

and it gives them an excuse to deduct their purchases as 'job related expenses'.

Esteemed Assemblyman Mr. Koretz, would you PLEASE add a rider to your bill requiring that the pornography industry use plot devices OTHER than pizza delivery guys in their product? If I hear "Miss Bunny, here's your pizza. And here's the pepperoni" one more time, I'm going to puke.

As a California taxpayer, I find it repulsive that the legislature in Sacramento cannot find anything more important to discuss than laws about what the porn industry stars wear or don't wear when filming.
This is about as far from an OSHA topic as any I can think of.
We are drowning in debt. We have no new power generation while the state grows by leaps and bounds.
We have no border policy which keeps out illegals and terrorists. Gangs are getting bolder and bolder each and every day. Out guns are being taken while they talk about CONDOMS! All these jerks can find to pass for a frivolous law is condoms in the porn industry?
It must be the water in Sacramento. This is the reason why Gray Davis was knocked out, and it will be the reason other "representatives" of the people are sent packing.

As a California taxpayer

As a former California taxpayer I can assure you that you are better off if this is where their creative juices are being spent. Turned to an important issue this "talent" has demonstrated the capability to do real lasting damage.

Aha. The HIV/AIDS scare among "sex workers" has a newer promoter -- this Dem from West Hollywood. Who knows, but maybe the workers themelves are complaining behind the scenes about their eeeevil bosses who demand live-and-free-and-unprotected shots. The question is... will this Dem then appoint a committee (on taxpayer dollar) to monitor the flicks?
