I smell illegal coordination

I think it is time for some of us freepers to file FEC complaints that the Post and others are violating campaign finance laws by not filing as a 527 group.

Further, the inevitable Post endorsement of Kerry in the editorial pages in Oct. is surely grouds for a violation of FEC laws and regulations.

Basically, if the editorial pages are off limits to campaign finance, then all anyone has to do is start some sham newspaper (and the ny times come close) and then start running tv ads reprinting your "editorial" views.

Unfortunately, the obscene McCain-Feingold revocation of free speech exempts bonified news media from political commentary restrictions. As Rush Limbaugh predicted, major media's support of McCain-Feingold free speech restrictions had a reason: liberal media can continue to spout propaganda, but unregistered private citizens cannot advertise their views.

Neat, huh?

I was thinking the same way, re:527s. They are exempt, but I sent in a fun letter to the AP today:

David Espo of the AP characterized "ridiculous" the claim that AP is a 527 organization, and therefore forbidden by law from campaigning for a specific candidate.

"The AP is not a 527 organization, therefore the campaign literature I wrote in support of John Kerry under AP on August 21, 2004, is perfectly justified", Mr. Espo insisted.

"As a loyal employee of AP, I will never hesitate to seek the highest level of impact for his election, using research gleaned from the Democratic party talking points. It's only right. That's my job," he continued.

You gave up any charade of objectivity in your article of 8/21/04 on Kerry. Instead of research, you wrote the DNC talking points.
