Some were astoundingly good - Raymond Chandler could be encountered there. And there were odd bits of knowledge to be stashed away - not a lot of people realize that "bimbo" used to refer to a male gangster, or where to get brass knuckles, or the proper employment of a blackjack...

I didn't know that was the origin of the word "bimbo"! Inneressin!

I went through a relatively long Sci-Fi phase too, after reading Kurt Vonnegut's Welcome to The Monkey House and Sirens of Titan. Then it was on to Ursula Le Guin, Isaac Azimov, Poul Anderson, Roger Zelazny, Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, and Ray Bradbury, which led me to H. P. Lovecraft, at which point I swerved into gothic horror novels, took a sidetrip to read my father's collection of Horatio Alger books and then headed toward True Crime, which is essentially an updated version of Ye Olde Trashy Deteckatiff Novels. I'm an avid (perhaps addicted would be a more suitable word) reader. I'll even read the printing on a sweetener packet at a restaurant. :o)

I know. None of this has to do with the subject of this thread. Thanks for the detour; I needed a break from the politics.
