My question would be that does a copy of the citation or any other paperwork come along with the medal?<<<<

I'm sure I heard that mentioned during an interview. It does not change, in my mind, the credibility of his story.

The exact date of valor probably did not ring a bell AT THE TIME. I find that believable. The man had just returned from fighting a war, being away from family, watching friends die, all the horrors - I am not surprised he did not verify the particular date on a citation.

You are right on. You do not remember dates unlesss it was Christmas, your birthday, you got wounded , or lost a good friend. I can clearly remember incidents but can't tell you what day or even month they occured.
