Only AFTER the weapon had been around for quite a number of years did the military get interested in using it for "some" sniper usage. In the very recent past, a SEMI-AUTOMATIC version was developed.

I think once one American criminal once used a .50BMG rifle to shoot someone at point-blank, but that's about it. At that range, it's basically just a shotgun.

Also, you should use the qualifier "in America" because around the world, I'll bet crimes are committed every day with .50 MGs (especially if you include war crimes as crimes)
