Kerry Hires Joe Lockhart to Combat Swift Boat Veterans
MSNBC 'First Read' Political Insider Memo ^ | 8/20/04 | Liz Wilner

Posted on 08/20/2004 7:41:15 AM PDT by gopwinsin04

The Los Angeles Times notes this morning that he Kerry campaign has hired former Clinton White House Press Secretary Joe Lockhart and Joel Johnson, a lobbyist who worked for President Clinton to help respond to the Swift Boat Veteran's attacks.

Group officials who discuss strategy on condition of anonymity said that the anti-Kerry group plans to hammer the Democrat for his war claims and protests after he left Vietnam, especially his claims that US soldiers committed war crimes.

The group are also arranging local veterans to criticize Kerry when he vists their states.

Aides said Kerry has been flooded with calls from concerned veterans, and a CBS poll released last night showed the senator losing significant support amongst those who served in the armed forces.

Instead of rebutting each charge, Kerry blamed Bush for sanctioning such highly personal attacks, though there is no evidence that the presdients campaign has any direct connections to the anti-Kerry group.

A Texas Republican? I thought they were being funded by FReepers and Rush Limbaugh!? No...wait...the Israelis! No...wait...Mike Savage and Hannity! No...wait...Ann Coulter and the Ghost of Ronald Reagan!

I get the Dim Talking Points confused...

But...the title of this article made me laugh:

Kerry Hires Joe Lockhart to Combat Swift Boat Veterans

Starting to sound like a Pro Wrestling Angle

Joe "The Lock" Lockhart: "You hear me, Boaties?! I'm takin' you DOWN! J F'n hired me to take care of yuz...and take care of yuz I'm gonna do! YEEEAAARRRGGGH!"

Great American SBV's: "Lockhart...we hear ya talkin' smack, but do ya got the GUTS to give it a go? Bring it on, suckaaaaaaaaa!"

Yeah, but the Swift Boat Vets are being funded by a Texas Republican.

That standard line is getting old.
But it is great though!

You know there is blood in the water when Dems start bringing on Clintonistas to do damage control.
Exactly!!

Hopefully it is a mortal wound.

Has there ever been a case where Republicans hired lawyers to go after an accusation by the Democrats during an election cycle?

As the firestorm rages on kerry's military record and his numbers continue to erode, he will want to divert attention away from that to another part of his campaign. The only thing left is his senate record, which he has been trying to avoid. So it seems to me that the fight for his camaign is here and now on his military record. The left was completely unprepared for this..... Just warms the cockles of my heart. :-]

The McCain-Feingold bill was possibly the worst piece of legislation signed into law by President Bush.

HAVEN'T YOU HEARD OF THIS NEW THING? IT'S CALLED A VETO!

Bush should have vetoed lots of bills, but he didn't

Bush has gutted the first amendment, gave us huge new federal education spending and huge new entitlements, among many other monstrosities.

But I'm one of those ".05% fringers" for bringing it up.

This is anecdotal information. The vets that vote Democrat, the vets that became liberal after WWII and Korea because they tired of war and death, and the vets that were always apathetic to politics (choosing not to vote) have come to conclusions foreign to the DNC:

o The War on Terror and 9-11 is a non-issue with the Dems. It rekindled a patriotism in themselves. They now must choose to stand by their party and ignore the DNC anti-American stand, or fess up and see the DNC as Zell Miller saw DNC (IMO, Miller's keynote will swing DNC vets, and the older generation DNC die-hards that still gives a crap for this nation).

o They see Kerry attacking the espirit d' corps (or as cops call it the blue line). Kerry is going after one of their own for no good reason but for his own vanity.

IMO, Kerry never learned spit about loyalty, friendship, and self-sacrifice in the military or life. If I were Teresa, I'd tell him to find another bed too. In fact, I bet this idea was hatched around the time she told him to pound sand.

I just picked up "unfit for command" at Hastings.

IMO, Hasting seems to provide conservative writer the best end caps, and upfront, line of sight placements.

No, O'Neill is an independent, IIRC. He has donated to candidates of both parties over the years. More to the dems than repub.

Also, he said he voted for Gore last election.

Mr. O'Neill said during one of several interviews that he had come to know two of his biggest donors, Harlan Crow and Bob J. Perry, through longtime social and business contacts.

Mr. Perry, who has given $200,000 to the group, is the top donor to Republicans in the state, according to Texans for Public Justice, a nonpartisan group that tracks political donations. He donated $46,000 to President Bush's campaigns for governor in 1994 and 1998. In the 2002 election, the group said, he donated nearly $4 million to Texas candidates and political committees.

Did the NY Times really think the Swift Boat Vets would go to Democrats to finance their project?

Rush Limbaugh has played the audio from the new ad 3 times on his show today. What a great freebie for the SBV! It is such an evocative ad, I got a lump in my throat.
