The idea around which liberalism coheres is that NOTHING actually matters but PR.

Journalists think that PR isn't everything - it's the ONLY thing.

• So they pick on anyone who can't shoot back, and exact tribute to stop.
  • those who exhibit no courage at all, but cooperate fully with journalism, are given flattering PR. For example they are called "courageous," and are given the undeserved appelation "liberal." To such an extent that in America the word "liberal" has been coopted to mean socialist. Most of the richest Americans fall into this category.
  • OTOH those who cannot afford to buy protection, and/or have too much courage, to go along at all are villified as "selfish" and "the rich." This is the middle class, and the Republican Party.
• So they themselves toady up to others who "buy ink by the barrel" - and herd together to defend journalism as an institution from attack with devastating unified PR counterattack. And we see what happens to a Bernard Goldberg.

This line of analysis assumes that journalism is cynical, and that its "Code of Ethics" is a sham. IMHO it explains an awful lot of the facts on the ground. Without the phenomena I describe above, socialism would be a dead letter in America.
