N.Y. '9/11' CHECK YANKS 300K DRIVER LICENSES

Up to 300,000 New Yorkers will have their driver's licenses yanked because they provided bogus Social Security numbers. Department of Motor Vehicles officials told The Post yesterday.

Between 275,000 and 300,000 of the state's 11.2 million drivers will lose their licenses thanks to a post-9/11 check of Social Security numbers listed on driver's license applications, said John Hilliard, DMV deputy commisioner for operations.

The program began last December, when the DMV sent driver information to the Social Security Administration.

Social Security numbers for 600,000 drivers didn't match those on file at the SSA, Hilliard said.

The DMV began sending out 4,000 notices per day telling motorists they had to verify the numbers or have their licenses suspended. Roughly half of those who recieved the mailings were able to clear up the matter.

Gee, I thought the SSAN couldn't be used for identification. Injunction and lawsuit, here we come.

SSN - NOT to be used for Identification Purposes.

NYC can KMA - but then I don't live there and never will.

But I thought the Social Security Number was supposed to be used only for "official" SSA functions?

Of course, people that went to the trouble to get fraudulent SSN's to obtain fraudulent drivers licenses would NEVER drive without a license once it's yanked. </sarc> Here in California, uninsured and unlicensed drivers (usually illegals) would never drive without a license. What a joke.

In Georgia, to get a fishing or hunting license, you have to submit your SSN. They are doing this, supposedly, to cross check for people who owe child support payments.

From the linked article:
Critics of the program, who plan to protest at the hearing, say it will hurt working immigrants who drive for a living.
IMHO, there are couple of problems with this. First, if a company would hire someone to drive that has an illegal driver's license, that company should be fined BIG time.

Second is the insurance situation. If the employer supplies the insurance, I doubt the ins. co. is gonna be happy if there is a claim. If the "working immigrant" supplies the insurance, you know it had to have been obtained under fraudulent circumstances.

I say Broavo for the DMV. But I agree that SSN is not supposed to be used for ID purposes (although Blue Cross has been doing it for years).

Well at least we've been Repeatedly Assured and Guaranteed by Congress and the SSA, to name a couple, that SSN's would NEVER be used for Identification of any type...

Of course if you owe child support, well that would be different...Or if you want a driving license, or a marriage license, or a hunting license, or a job, or a library card, or a credit card, or a bank account, house, apartment, car...

Hey, I know where you can still get a hamburger without a social security card.

I don't see any mention of cross checking these fraudulent Driver's Licenses with Voter Rolls, which means Motor Voter has become a fraudulent "vaporvoter" factory, and a large number of those caught in this raid will resubmit newly stolen SSIN's for new fraudulently obtained NYS driver's licenses, signing up for Motor Voter at that time.

The State of New York is a sinking ship.

That's a different issue though --- this is an issue of felony document fraud --- there should be more consequences than just losing a drivers license. They should be charged with felony document fraud, deported and banned forever from reentry.

They could use a birth certificate, fingerprints, etc for identification instead of the SS number, since the drivers license is used more as an identification than it is to drive.
