NAJAF, Iraq (Reuters) - Suspected U.S. AC-130 gunships have pounded positions held by Sh'ite militiamen in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf and large orange multiple flashes have lit the night sky.
A large cloud of smoke was rising from an ancient cemetery on Thursday where rebels loyal to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr have fought U.S. troops for two weeks.
The explosions from the bombing, that went on for more than 30 minutes, were loudly heard several km (miles) away.
The Iraqi government earlier gave Sadr a few hours to agree to its demands or face a major offensive.

To tell the truth, if these were Southern Baptists who had taken over the Dauphin Way Baptist Church in Mobile, AL, and were using it to attack police I would be all in favor of OUR troops taking them out, regardless of what was required. Baptists don't have a really 'holy' shrine like that or the Vatican, but whatever facility they were using to bring disgrace to the religion would be fair game as far as I'm concerned. I trust the members of Dauphin Way will understand their church was chosen only for illustrative purposes!

this is way beyond that. This isn't any old corner Mosque and the chief bad guys like Nasrallah and Khamanei know it. This is a set up, a call to arms. This is their Alamo.

Personally, though, I would LOVE give 'em the opportunity to die under a pile of gold-leafed bricks. Sends the right message: Sistine Chapel, Taj Mahal, Church of the Nativity, or Versailles, there is no place for you hide, and nothing we will not level to kill you. If we continue to let 'em hid there, we just send a rather foolish message - crawl under a cultural icon and we negotiation rather than slaughter the scum. I totally agree with you.

AC-130's are pretty distinctive, I'd think the author should know one if he's seen it...
Especially if it's pounding away at rebels enclaves..
