Keyes won't back down on reparations
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 8/19/04 | SCOTT FORNEK

Posted on 08/19/2004 5:27:04 AM PDT by kattracks

His voice rising to a yell, Republican U.S. Senate nominee Alan Keyes told a bipartisan civic group Wednesday he "will not budge" from his belief that descendants of slaves should be exempted from income taxes to help heal the wounds of past discrimination and segregation.

The former presidential candidate disdainfully brushed aside questions over whether his suggestion should apply to rich African Americans such as Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan or Oprah Winfrey.

"Do you know how many Oprah Winfreys there might have been running around in the 1930s or in the 1920s or in the 19-teens that got nowhere because the doors were shut in their face?" Keyes thundered. "If you think that because I wear a conservative label, I have forgotten that history and am not mindful of that injustice -- then I will tell you now that you are wrong."

Keyes delivered his blistering defense at a luncheon of the City Club of Chicago, scolding fellow conservatives who challenged his proposal and evoking the struggle of his African-American parents, saying they had talent and "hearts and spirit and strength and faith."

"Why didn't they get to a point where they could stand on this platform?" Keyes aked.

Vying against Democrat Barack Obama, Keyes drew heat from conservatives earlier this week when he proposed exempting descendants of slaves from income taxes for a generation or two, a view he insists "involves a traditionally Republican, conservative and market-oriented approach."

On Wednesday, Keyes ridiculed the fuss over his position, saying it is simply a tax break, something "Republicans and my conservative brethren" don't object to when applied to a "wealthy corporation."

Conservative activist Jack Roeser met with Keyes for what Roeser called "a long argument and an intense one" over the issue before the speech. A Barrington businessman, Roeser said he still is not sold on Keyes' reparations proposal, but still plans to support him anyway. "I will tell my friends that this is a good man, and we should support him."

All elected by the people in their home States.

Unlike Keyes, who's lost every election, and will do it again.

And in spite of the fact that you've been shown to be wrong yet again, I see that you still refuse to admit it.

TE: Thanks for straightening me out.

Then why did I say that? You didn't admit that your 58% figure is past history with an expected 10% increase to 68% in one year. Yet again is a little strong too. You haven't shown me to be wrong elsewhere.

In order for your assumption to work out, the number of illegal immigrants either entering the country, or the number of people who entered the country legally and allowed their visas to expire who are not Mexicans, would have to stop growing.

That would apparently be the case according to the expected 10% one year increase.

Better to elect a full fledged RINO socialist instead of a hardcore conservative who makes one bad reccomendation? They don't call the GOP the stupid party for nothing.

Not while I was here. Since I moved here two years ago we elected a conservative Republican Governor and a very conservative Republican Lt. Governor and Republicans picked up a few seats in the legislature.

I'm good for this state. ; )

I am from Colorado. I pulled the lever for conservative Wayne Allard-R and other R's who now hold office there.

It is sad to see the little mountain tourist town I lived in for twenty years overrun with illegals from Mexico. I can't go back now. Mom tells me that there are no Americans in construction there now. There were a lot of illegals in the only other available working class jobs (hotel-restaurant) before I left. They live several families to the house. That's illegal but the town won't enforce it. Except on citizens of course.

Small towns like that used to be immune to that. No more. In '94 I found out what it was like to compete with illegals in Albuquerque. I couldn't do it then. It's worse now.

Laugh while you can, amigo. Your job may be immune to competition from illegals but the economy isn't. You'll feel it sooner or later.

And another thing. I wasn't giving you sh%t about RINOs. It's strange that you'd characterize my response like that. You made a point about Keyes effect on the IL GOP and I countered with a point of my own. It's just a debate of ideas and issues. There's nothing personal about it. I have no desire to make it personal because you don't know me and I don't know you.

Go back and read the exchange between Luis and myself. In context it is obvious who I am talking about. I listed several.

You ever seen his picture? Obama looks pretty black to me.

I have seen many pix, and videos. He looks exactly like a half-Egyptian/half-white roommate I once had. Obama's an Arab.

I think you need to get your eyes checked. Obama's a mulatto Christian.

The bright side is that we don't ever have to take him seriously again. The dark side is that, like Buchanan, Keyes will nail it once in a while, but pointlessly, because they are frothy and fringey, like Nader and Kucinich, and even when they are serious, no one will take them seriously.

So on this one issue, you'll throw out the baby with the bathwater?

Why not do the same with other conservatives?

As I wrote in my column:
"When a person decides to enter the arena of ideas, I would ask him or her to make a simple decision: either be a pundit or a politician. When one is a pundit and tries to influence the sentiments of others, all he or she has is their word. Politicians have no such impediment. Their primary goal is to be elected by as many people as possible, so past loyalties can and will be sacrificed to meet that objective.

I feel like I’ve been Keyed…."

People love the math, but not the principle and the premise. I love the math enough to support this idea up til a certain income. Oprah, M. Jordan, etal., should still have to pay taxes... they have "arrived". "Reparations" would then be more like "reconciliation". Keyes needs to hone his idea more. Yet, even with all this, (and defining race, heritage, and ethnicity) we open up a logistical nightmare and rampant abuse issues. I am a big fan of Dr. Keyes, but I wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot pole.
