Keyes won't back down on reparations
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 8/19/04 | SCOTT FORNEK

Posted on 08/19/2004 5:27:04 AM PDT by kattracks

His voice rising to a yell, Republican U.S. Senate nominee Alan Keyes told a bipartisan civic group Wednesday he "will not budge" from his belief that descendants of slaves should be exempted from income taxes to help heal the wounds of past discrimination and segregation.

The former presidential candidate disdainfully brushed aside questions over whether his suggestion should apply to rich African Americans such as Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan or Oprah Winfrey.

"Do you know how many Oprah Winfreys there might have been running around in the 1930s or in the 1920s or in the 19-teens that got nowhere because the doors were shut in their face?" Keyes thundered. "If you think that because I wear a conservative label, I have forgotten that history and am not mindful of that injustice -- then I will tell you now that you are wrong."

Keyes delivered his blistering defense at a luncheon of the City Club of Chicago, scolding fellow conservatives who challenged his proposal and evoking the struggle of his African-American parents, saying they had talent and "hearts and spirit and strength and faith."

"Why didn't they get to a point where they could stand on this platform?" Keyes aked.

Vying against Democrat Barack Obama, Keyes drew heat from conservatives earlier this week when he proposed exempting descendants of slaves from income taxes for a generation or two, a view he insists "involves a traditionally Republican, conservative and market-oriented approach."

On Wednesday, Keyes ridiculed the fuss over his position, saying it is simply a tax break, something "Republicans and my conservative brethren" don't object to when applied to a "wealthy corporation."

Conservative activist Jack Roeser met with Keyes for what Roeser called "a long argument and an intense one" over the issue before the speech. A Barrington businessman, Roeser said he still is not sold on Keyes' reparations proposal, but still plans to support him anyway. "I will tell my friends that this is a good man, and we should support him."

You're so full of it it's laughable.

Right.
We will see the results in november.
I doubt you will be laughing.

You think he will press this on, or back down bigtime?
Inquiring minds want to know... and you claimed to be close to his campaign, visiting his offices and such of late... tell us EV... He gonna stick with the "reparations are ok" line, or not?

LOL - like I'm gonna give that to a guy who saves posts from pulled threads.

Now that you mention it, how DOES one verify that the material allegedly copied from a PULLED thread was really posted there in the first place?

This is affecting every republican race in the midwest.
Keyes means to bring down the party or else...

wow.

If I hear on the news that he's "holed up in a mosque", I want the popcorn concession.

race based tax cuts are NOT a conservative position.
He's reiterating it, it's no mistake.
He means it. And he means it for blacks ONLY for two generations.

It may be cool with you... but NOT with a LOT of fiscal conservatives in Illinois.
Not me either. I think it's marxist.

I seriously doubt you have made a single post on FR in opposition to reparations or anything resembling it before this.

You're simply jumping on an opportunity to blast Keyes.

It's laughable, like I said.

And sad.

race based tax cuts are NOT a conservative position.

I know this. I also know he wants to eliminate the income tax.

This guy is over the top! He positiones himself above everyone in this country! He has no understanding of reality, just his god like know it all stance. He may have Debate skills, but is way off base.

Do you really believe that by taking a certain group of people off the tax rolls, they will become Republican? If anything this will further entrench them in the Dims party. We'll raise taxes, but don't worry it won't affect you. We'll even give bigger handouts, don't worry you won't have to pay for it. How exactly will this help elect people (other that Saint Keyes) who will rid the nation of the income tax?

You are what's pathetic here EV.
Keyes is blasting himself with a race based wealth redistribution via the tax code...

Would you support marx or lenin as long as they went to church and opposed abortions?
Would you if they were running against a pro choice, capitalist, free enterprise candidate.

Serious question.
Serious answer.
If you would vote for a marxist, based on one issue only... you are NOT a conservative. You are more like a christian socialist, than you are a fiscal conservative... and it's okay to support that worldview, but NOT as a conservative republican. Just know that taxing based on race, is a precursor to progressive genocide. And has been known to launch civil wars.

Chavez is anti abortion.
You think he is okay too?

That does not speak well for your reading comprehension abilities.

This coming from someone who can't even rread or remember his own posts. You change positions so much that you make Kerry look resolved.

If observing that moronic behavior makes one a moron is tantamount to "hate"

No, I don't hate you despite your moronic behavior.

LOL!

Is that just because of this issue or because you generally don't like Keyes?

I am still waiting for Keyes to repent on the race based marxist wealth distribution plan.

It's really quite disturbing.
If not, maybe the pro life Kohn might be a more conscientous choice...

Keyes once tried to run for senator as pro life libertarian... but they wouldn't let him. So, it is a consdideration. I did get a call from some pretty ticked off republicans in my family from the midwest. They say white folks are jumping ship on this race thing.

We shall see in November.
Keyes has played a dangerous gambit on this one.
It may affect other races in Indiana, Ohio and such.

Keyes needs to be reigned in on this. It's over the top for a conservative candidate to even joke about.
