most of the pro life FISCAL CONSERVATIVES I know in that area, are voting for Kohn now. and this means lost votes for the R's. Not good. It also impacts what small chance president bush had of taking illinois, and the surrounding states that are tossups.

Who amongst the fiscal conservatives wants to vote for a party that flamboyantly is pushing racebait tax policies on some level or another? Who amongst independents wants race based taxation?

Why in the name of heaven is this even being coutenanced by folks like you, unless YOU are operating on "personal loyalty" instead of fiscally conservative principles?

I understand people's gut reactions against this proposal...I really do. It is bound to rub a lot of people the wrong way.

But what I don't understand is why so many conservatives simply refuse to see the benefits of what would amount to a HUGE tax cut. Yes, it is "unfair." Life is unfair. The tax code is deeply unfair. Matter of fact, I think that just about any tax break that someone else gets that I don't is unfair.

This mentality is nearly universal. It is what the Democrats so successfully tap into every time they accuse Bush and the Republicans of "squeezing the middle class" to give a tax break to the rich.

If your sole standard for supporting a tax break is "fairness," then how can you support any tax breaks at all???

I've never gotten that impression. I think it's more likely that Medved hasn't had time to think it through, or possibly doesn't even have a clear picture of what was proposed and is just having a knee-jerk reaction to the word "reparations".

Not saying he would LIKE it even then - I'm not sure I do - I'm just saying that such an outraged reaction is usually a first reaction...probalby he needs to hear some of the rational behind it to have a calmer take on it.

Just like Keyes, Michael isn't always right. We're supposed to be big boys and girls in this party, able to debate the issues intelligently so I don't worry that Medved disagrees with Keyes. Just about any and every tax break is "selective." The entire tax code is selective, and it always will be unless we can get to an across the board flat tax regime. I'm not holding my breath for that.

I never said he doesn't really mean it. He probably realizes that the chances of it ever happening are very, very slim. So he uses it as a rhetorical wedge and as an entree into the contest for the Black vote. Personally, I see nothing wrong with the tactic even though I disagree with the idea.

Well I have a lot of problems with the tactic, and with candidates who say one thing and do another. But rather than argue with the Keyes crowd I'll just say that I no longer care what principle Dr. Keyes trashes, what whopper he tells, what level of pandering he stoops to. I still think that he's going to get his head handed to him in November, but on the off chance he wins then I admit that he certainly won't be any worse than the rest of the crowd that infests the Senate these days.

Someone else on this thread just made another great point in support of his proposal: if it gets African Americans thinking in terms of personal economic empowerment and tax reductions, the Democrats wouldn't win another national election in our lifetimes.

Actually this is the exact opposite of what we need. More people being taken off the tax-slave rolls. Once there off, what are the odds they are going to oppose tax increases on the rest of us.
The biggest problem with this proposal is that an even smaller percentage of people will be paying a greater proportion of the income taxes, increasing the pressure to raise the rates even higher.
