UKIAH, California (AP) -- The Coast Guard has recovered the headless body of a diver who was killed by a shark off the Mendocino County coast.
Randy Fry, 50, was attacked Sunday afternoon in shallow water near Westport while diving for abalone with a companion.
Fry's body was recovered Monday; the companion escaped injury.
A friend of Fry's estimated the shark was between 16 to 18 feet long.

I hate great whites.
he can still vote in November, right?
Arrgghh. My brother goes abb-ing near Mendocino. He doesn't dive, though.
If they aren't burning down bars in RI they're ripping divers and surfers to shreds. I guess you have a point there.
Have you seen the video of the South African surfer who was tag teamed by a pair of Great Whites and survived with only a mangled hand? Unbelievable. These things are pack hunters. Raptors of the sea.
I have tried to relocate the video and it's gone off the web. I guess the oceanside lobby or whatever group looks out for the interests of beach communities had it removed.
Anybody see Open Water? Scariest movie I have seen in a long time. Granted it's a little irrational to be scared of sharks but I am none the less!
"If they aren't burning down bars in RI they're ripping divers and surfers to shreds."
LOL , good stuff!
I haven't seen that video but I heard about it. So much for all the studies that claimed they were solitary solo hunters.
And for all the eco-weenies that say they're a valuable part of the cycle of life blah, blah, blah I say to hell with that.
Hunt them into extinction.
How do you Ab without diving into the water?
I'm not being a smart-*** I really thought you had to have someone in the water to get them.
They get in the water, but it's shallow water, all they have to do is duck under the water and pull them off the rocks. They're at the shoreline, not out in a boat like Fry was. Don't need scuba gear that way.
Like the old joke:
Fry to companion: "Can you swim faster than a shark?"
Companion: "No. But I only have to swim faster than you."
Sharks are mooselimbs? Who woulda thunk it.
As an active scuba diver that's been on more than a few boat dive excursions into blue water, I'm sure I'll find it gut wrenching to watch.
Can't wait...:-0
Ouch BTTT
