TEHRAN- (Agencies) -- President Mohammad Khatami here Tuesday said the progress achieved by the country in the petrochemical industry is a source of great honor.

He made the remark at a ceremony launching a petrochemical complex project here in western Iran in which he drew attention to the country’s huge supplies of oil and gas which, he said, are a great advantage.

Khatami explained that he had high hopes the project will bring remarkable changes in the lives of people in the province.

The petrochemical complex, with an expected annual production capacity of 300,000 tons of polyethylene, is to be constructed on a 143-hectare piece of land, 8 kms south of the provincial capital.

The final product of the complex will not only meet domestic need but also those of foreign countries, particularly Turkey and Iraq.

Polyethylene is used in the agriculture and packaging industries and also in the production of plastic dishes and parts, covers for cables and home appliances.

Khatami launched Kurdestan petrochemical project in an official ceremony near the city of Sanandaj Tuesday. The project includes west ethylene pipeline, west Iran petrochemical project and Kurdestan petrochemical project.

Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh who was also present at the ceremony, stated that construction of large oil and gas industrial units would not only bring about industrial development but also help develop petrochemical downstream industries.

West ethylene pipeline is planned to carry ethylene produced at Pars Special Economic Energy Zone to Mahabad. Along the route a number of petrochemical companies will take their needed ethylene from the line to produce petrochemical end products such as polyethylene. The line is 1,500 km long and its diameter is 20 inches at the beginning and 10 inches at the end. Initial capacity of the company has also been estimated at 1.2 million tons per year.

West Iran petrochemical project includes Kohgylouyeh-Boir Ahmad petrochemical project (an ethylene glycol production unit with the annual capacity of 450,000 tons and an ethylene oxide production unit with the annual capacity of 50,000 tons per annum); Lorestan province petrochemical project (a light and heavy linear polyethylene production unit with the annual capacity of 300,000 tons per year and a butane 1000 production unit with the annual capacity of 30,000 tons per year); Kermanshah province petrochemical project (a heavy polyethylene production unit with annual capacity of 300,000 tons per year); West Azarbaijan province petrochemical project (a light and heavy linear polyethylene production unit with the annual capacity of 300,000 tons per year); a butane 1000 production unit with the annual capacity of 30,000 tons as well as Kurdestan petrochemical project and the 11th olefin project.

Kurdestan petrochemical project will be implemented in the vicinity of provincial capital city of Sanandaj and is among petrochemical companies that have created many jobs. The project will promote growth of downstream industries that are fed by petrochemical projects.

President Mohammad Khatami arrived in this western province earlier today to inaugurate a number of newly completed industrial projects as well as launch several others.

Minister of Mines and Industries Es`haq Jahangiri and his deputy, Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh, are accompanying President Khatami in this one-day visit.

He will also be meeting with residents of the province and lend his presence to a session of the provincial administrative council. The trip is Khatami`s second to the province since he was elected president seven years ago.
