I don't know either, but I think you're right. I don't know about OK, but brass knuckles are illegal in most states.

I'm not saying this is not worth pursuing, but the local cops and DA held the guy and investigated and came to the conclusion that it was self-defense. Perhaps it was.

From the article, I am inferring that the nature of the deceased's injuries showed he was hit from behind with a pipe.  The only way the bum could have gotten behind the guy was after the bum had been roughed up and the two attackers were walking away. The remaining attacker was scared away by being alone at that point, pipe beating brass knucks most of the time.
