Many liberal Jews are more afraid of Christian fundamentalism than they are of a foreign threat posed by Arabs. Israeli Jews aren't so confused on this issue...

In my travels among many Jewish clients, there are the Orthodox and beyond them, the Hasidim. They tend to have larger families, attend services regularly and follow religious and dietary requirements - they are the Republican faction.

The bulk of American Jews I encounter are the Reformed. They tend to have two or fewer children, attend services on only the highest of holy days, and disregard the dietary requirements - these folks are the Democrat faction. They are reflexively liberal. I think their support for Kerry stems more from their liberalism than from their identity as Jews.

BTW, they also favor an accomodation on the part of Israel toward the Palis. I realize these are gneralizations, but they are based on observation, not stereotyping.
