NEW YORK The fiancee of a journalist snatched off the street in Iraq says he wanted to understand the country's culture and history. Marie Helene Carleton says her fiancee - Micah Garen - was working on a story about the looting of archaeological sites in Iraq when he was abducted. Carleton is also Garen's colleague and co-founder of New York-based Four Corners Media.
Iraqi police say 36-year-old Garen and his Iraqi translator, Amir Doushi, were kidnapped Friday by two armed men in a busy market in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah.
According to its Web site, Four Corners is a ``documentary organization working in still photography, video and print media.'' Carleton says Garen last e-mailed his mother on August 13th, and has not been heard from since. He had planned to return to the states on Monday.
In New Haven, Connecticut, Garen's father Alan said he, too, had not heard from his son for several days.
This was Garen's third trip to Iraq in the past year. He first visited last June, then again around Christmas. He went again in March and has been there since.
Garen was born in New Haven but has resided in New York for the past decade.
I hate to say this but I think he is now learning a lot about the history of Islam (the religion of pieces!). Hopefully he will be found safe and sound.
Right like the kind of people who took him care.
I'm waiting for the first female journalist to go missing resulting in a female beheading. Probably only a matter of time.
This is like that Homicide episode where a Yankees fan was found murdered outside of Camden Yards. Munch wasn't sure a crime had been committed.
Joe CONason, Ellis Hellican, Paul Krugman? Just a few names that spring to mind from my look at the headline...
"Micah Garen - was working on a story about the looting of archaeological sites in Iraq when he was abducted."
A liberal trying to expose the terrible results of the war
inflicted on Iraqi culture.
Oh how I miss "Homicide:Life on the Streets".
Micah Garen ... hmmm sounds Jewish to me.
"The fiancee of a journalist snatched off the street in Iraq says he wanted to understand the country's culture and history."
Sound like another Daniel Pearl. He's done.

Sounds like Micah Garen lives in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY.
