(Columbia SC) August 16, 2004 - Richland County Sheriff's officers arrested a shooting suspect without incident around 2:00am Monday after an eight-hour stand-off on Atlas Road that started Sunday.
Investigators say Ronald Porterfield shot a man on Percival Road before police were able to catch up to him around 6:00pm Sunday. Richland County Deputies wrestled Porterfield to the ground, cuffed him and put him in the back of a patrol car.
The arresting deputies then turned to inspect a bag Porterfield had been carrying. That's when he reportedly slipped out of his cuffs and pulled a 9mm handgun from his clothing. He then held the gun to his head in an effort to get deputies to leave the scene.
He fell asleep around 2:00am and was arrested without further incident.
The deputies reportedly did not pat down Porterfield and the incident is under internal investigation by the department. The deputies are not facing disciplinary action.
Department spokesman Lt. Joseph Pellicci says the pat down procedure is not the issue, "If they are still in a high state of tension, you want to handcuff them and get them back in the car and search them once they calm down." Pellicci calls not patting down Porterfield an "oversight."
Porterfield's alleged victim was taken to the hospital, where he's recovering from gunshot wounds. Captain Marty Reaves says, "He's still living. He got shot in the arm and the leg, but he is still living."
Deputies say Porterfield also has outstanding arrest warrants in West Columbia.
I'm reminded of that scene in "Blazing Saddles" where Clevon Little did the same thing.
I'll bet he had no shirt on ,too...
Beat me to it.
Sounded like a Mel Brookes movie.
Dumb cop news.
Everyone who reads the article will immediately think of the same scene. Classic.
"Do what he say! Do what he say!"
Looks like everybody took their "stupid pills" before this incident.
Y'all grow some bright ones down there, don't ya!--LOL!
"The sherrif is Near!!!!"

If I ever tried to lead a life of crime, this is probably how it would go.
Anybody remenber "Fast Eddie" Watkins ?.
You can read all about him at this link...

A few excerpts,
"Eddie's friends included judges who sentenced him and wardens who kept him locked up for much of his life. And he liked cops. "I was the bad guy," he said. "They weren't the bad guys."
While Eddie was holed up in a Cleveland bank, surrounded by cops, a federal judge brought heart pills to Eddie, who had had a heart attack during the stickup.
He escaped from prisons a half-dozen times, the last one in Atlanta in 1980. The FBI cornered him in his car after a bank robbery in Cleveland and he put a gun to his head, taking himself hostage. He amused himself during the standoff by throwing thousands of dollars out of the car and taking pictures of the feds chasing the money, with TV helicopters circling overhead."
Twice, I have had prisoners put in the back of my ambulance, handcuffed, but still having weapons on them.
We had to disarm them in the back of a moving ambulance. Even handcuffed, they could still twist and kick around pretty much. (One was even shot and he still fought pretty hard.)
Both times, I had asked if they had been checked for weapons. Both times they said there were no weapons.
After the second time, I started asking that they be searched while I was watching.
(I know, I should have learned my lesson the FIRST time!)
