if memory fades then it is time to release all his records and those of his BOB to get to what was reported 35 years ago...best evidence..
Boat 94 was shot up pretty bad on January 29, so there may have been repairs that would have kept it out of service for a week or two.
Which is perfectly OK. But with all the off time and training time I'm wondering how mich time he really spent "on the rivers". I mean if you take his 4.5 months and subtract 1 month for training, 2 weeks in January where he went to Saigon, another 2 weeks while his boat got fixed up, he wasn't on the rivers that much.

Not necessarily. Many of these folks had to meet during training at either Treasure Island (San Francisco) or amphibious training at Coronado (San Diego).
According to the 'timeline' on John Kerry.com, Kerry reported for 10-week training at Treasure Island on January 3, 1967. (his fitness reports assign him there from 17 Dec 66 to 10 Mar 67).
Also according to the 'timeline', they show Kerry at Coronado from July 20, 1968 to November 16, 1968.
Per USA Today, April 13, 2004, Skip Barker "first met Kerry during Swift Boat training in Coronado". Kerry's good friend Don Droz, who was killed shortly after Kerry departed Vietnam, was also at Treasure Island and Coronado in 1967-1968 according to the LA Times August 11, 2004. There is a distinct possibility that many of these men had met before being in Vietnam.

Based on personal experience, the officers don't train with the enlisted. Fraternization is not permitted. You don't hang out with one another. As an exception, I went through survival school (SERE training) with PBR crews prior to my assignment to Vietnam. We had 72 personnel (6 officers and 66 enlisted), but it was not a bonding situation. I can understand how Kerry could meet Barker and Droz who were officers.
I want, I need, to get out and tell what he wont tell people, as to his unbelievable courage, Short said. No one wants someone thumping his chest saying, Im a hero. And it will be a cold day in Hades when John Kerry does that.

Short seems to have some credibility problems of his own...
"We were in a small canal and normally we would have tried to exit, but Mr. Kerry ordered us to charge," Short said. "While I shot high, he and Tommy Bellodeau charged under me, right at the guy, and we routed them. That's why Mr. Kerry won the Silver Star."
Short said the crew avoided any casualties, even though 800 of 900 American troops caught in that zone died that day. He said it was a few weeks later, April 28, 1969, that he finished his tour and last saluted Kerry.

I will defer to you personal knowledge and experience. Thanks for clarifying.
Del Sandusky
index bump
?
bump to read all later
Sandusky was the senior enlisted man who took command of shot-up PCF94 when Lt. Peck was wounded on Jan 29th and was at the helm when the craft was beached on Feb 28, and again had the helm on Mar 13th when Kerry pulled Rassmann out of the water.
It appears Del Sandusky was aboard the entire time of Kerry's command.
Understood, but Kerry was in command of two boats, the PCF 94 and PCF 44. Gardner was on the PCF 44. According to Unfit for Command Kerry took over PCF 94 from Peck in "early February." If that is the case, Sandusky served with Kerry for less than two months. Kerry left Vietnam on March 26 and his request to leave was submitted on March 17. Gardner spent a longer time under Kerry than Sandusky.
I question Kerry's PCF44 "command". I posted on another thread:
08 Nov - 06 Dec CosDiv14 Boston Whaler (transferred a few days after his first Purple Heart "action")I've (and others) wonder how Kerry got a SWIFT command without spending any time in type. IMO, Kerry was probably OIC --under instruction while Lt. Wright remained the responsible OIC.
06 Dec - 13 Dec CosDiv11 PCF44 OIC (or under observation of Lt. Wright, the "real" PCF44 OIC?)
14 Dec - 28 Jan CosDiv13 Unknown (awaiting his own craft to command --or undergoing "re-training" due to Wright's poor opinion of Kerry?)
29 Jan - 26 Mar CosDiv11 PCF94 OIC (After Lt. Peck was wounded)
27 Mar - 31 Jul MSTSA Admiral's aide (Combat vet in MSC ?)
Kerry himself can't even do that .. he's told so many lies, he doesn't know that the truth is anymore
Hi, LCDR was my dad. I was told he was in charge of all the small crafts in Vietnam. Does that include the swift boats?
