Arafat Paid Moshe Hirsh Tens of Thousands of Dollars 02:00 Aug 16, '04 / 29 Av 5764
(IsraelNN.com) According to documents recovered from Yasser Arafats Ramallah headquarters, he has paid Rabbi Moshe Hirsch tens of thousands of dollars to obtain his continued support. The documents were recovered from Arafats office by IDF troops during Operation Defensive Shield.
According to correspondent Haggai Huberman, Hirsch received $25,000 in January 2002 and an additional $30,000 when he signed on the dotted line, officially lending his support to Arafat.
Hirsch is affiliated with a fringe extremist segment of the ultra-Orthodox Neturei Karta sect which does not recognize the legitimacy of the State of Israel, and goes so far as to express support for a Palestinian state since members feel Israel may not run affairs in the Land of Israel until the Messiah is revealed.

Years ago, one of the liberal rags had an op-ed (that's all those things have -- no articles, just op-ed) called "Sweating Out Begin" (reference to Menachem Begin, who was I believe the first Likud PM of Israel). Sharon is an old man, but this will bring him a new zest for life. This is a real bribe (as opposed to one of the phony allegations brought against Sharon and a number of other popular politicians in Israel) and will have an impact at the ballot box. Of course, his popularity (that is, the popularity of his policies) is too great, and Labor won't challenge him to force elections (which it could do). Now, Labor is "sweating out Sharon" -- he won't live forever. Which is too bad, really. ;')
